Love TinyHand. The one thing I kept missing was a quick way to capture what I'm pointing at. While the hand is on it takes over clicks, so ⌘⇧4 / ⌘⇧5 get awkward. This adds a one-shot way to do it.

What it does

  • Two-finger tap (right-click) while the hand is on: takes a snapshot with the hand and the ink in it, copies it to the clipboard, and saves a PNG to a folder.
  • Two-finger double-tap: starts a screen recording. Tap again or press Esc to stop. The .mov is saved and copied, ready to paste.
  • TinyHand's own toolbar and hints are left out of snapshots and videos.
  • Toolbar gets camera, record and settings buttons. The menu gets Take Snapshot / Record Video. ⌃⌥S is a keyboard backup (press twice for video) and can be changed in Settings.
  • Settings → General → Snapshots and videos: two-finger-tap on/off, copy to clipboard, save to folder, choose folder (default Desktop).
  • Opening the app again shows Settings, which helps when the menu bar icon is hidden behind the notch.

How it works

  • New Capture.swift uses ScreenCaptureKit. It excludes every TinyHand window except the overlay. Snapshots use SCScreenshotManager on macOS 14+ and the first frame of a short stream on 13. Recordings write H.264 .mov through AVAssetWriter, up to 60 fps, scaled to fit 4K.
  • InputTap routes right-mouse-down to the capture gesture (switchable). Left click and drag are unchanged.
  • Asks for Screen Recording permission the first time and explains how to turn it on if it was declined.

Tip for best results

In Settings → Drawing, set Lines fade to 10 seconds or Keep until cleared. Drawings fade after 3 seconds by default, which is fine for videos but can disappear before you take a snapshot. With Keep until cleared you draw, snap, then press ⌃⌥X.

Ideas I didn't get to

  • An option to ask where to save each file instead of always using one folder.

Tested

Built and run on an Apple-silicon MacBook Air (macOS 26): snapshot, recording, toolbar exclusion and settings all work. A demo video is in the comments.

Not looking for credit. I just wanted the feature. Use any or all of it, or redo it your way.

A two-finger tap (right-click) while the hand is on takes a snapshot that
includes the hand and the drawing, copies it to the clipboard and saves it
to a folder. Two quick taps start a video; one more tap or Esc stops it.
The toolbar gets camera and record buttons, the menu gets matching items,
and ⌃⌥S works as a keyboard backup. Uses ScreenCaptureKit and leaves
TinyHand's own toolbar and hints out of the picture.

Opening TinyHand again shows Settings, and the toolbar gets a gear button,
for Macs where the menu bar icon is hidden behind the notch.
