This would implement #1619. Not sure what this project's standards are for making things settings vs keeping the settings cleaner with meaningful defaults, so absolutely understandable if this PR is rejected.
I personally find this feature a bit distracting and it isn't really needed in my personal workflow, so I'd be happy to have the option to turn it off. I also do sometimes lose all unread items when the sync happens, which can easily mean I haven't read the bottom 2 or 3 items yet (but that can probably be fixed without making this optional as I guess that is not intended behavior).
