Welcome to the ThirdPlace Wiki

Welcome to the official ThirdPlace wiki! This space serves as a knowledge hub for contributors and collaborators, providing documentation on various tasks, issues, and design decisions. Here, you'll find details on new features, interface designs, and the philosophy behind ThirdPlace, all aimed at fostering a more open and community-driven digital space.

What is ThirdPlace?

ThirdPlace was born from the realization that traditional third places—public spaces where people can gather outside of work and home—are disappearing. Social media, in its current form, has contributed to this decline by replacing in-person interactions with digital ones. However, the centralized and profit-driven nature of major social media platforms has led to environments that prioritize corporate interests over genuine social connection. As a result, these platforms often become exploitative, designed to maximize engagement at the expense of user well-being, leading to polarization, isolation, and an ever-narrowing scope of interaction.

Unlike traditional social media, ThirdPlace is designed to be a true digital third place—an online space that fosters organic, real-world-style interactions. Conversations here are ephemeral, lasting only as long as participants are engaged. Users see and interact with others in a way that mimics real-life socialization, creating opportunities for genuine human connection that could have otherwise happened in physical third places.

ThirdPlace is fully open source, meaning anyone can contribute to its development. Popular community requests are publicly visible and open for contribution, ensuring that the platform evolves according to user needs rather than corporate mandates. By remaining community-driven and transparent, we aim to prevent the gradual degradation of the platform and ensure that it remains a welcoming and meaningful space for all.

We hope that the connections formed on ThirdPlace extend beyond the platform, encouraging real-world engagement and stronger community ties. Together, we can reclaim the spirit of third places in the digital age.
