Top Sights in Somaliland

Laas Geel

At Laas Geel are to be found some of the Africa's oldest and most beautiful prehistoric cave paintings.
daubed on the golden, umber rocks of an outcrop in the arid desert landscape 50km or so outside the Somaliland capital of Hargeisa.
their relative obscurity is partly due to the fact that they were only recently discovered, in 2002, by a French group of archaeologists.
the paintings importance was recognized immediately, and estimates of their age range from 5,000 years to more than 10,000,
putting them in the neolithic age, and thus more recent than Europe's famous Paleolithic examples, giving the visitorsa glimpse into a very different world.
Laas Geel translates as where the giraffes once watered. As well as giraffe, the paintings depict antelope, possibly domesticated dogs, and certainly cows,
the last of these lacking the hump that has been bred-in over the intervening millennia.

Daallo Mountain

Daallo Mountain is a national park in the eastern Sanaag region of a Somaliland. Is one of Somaliland's foremost natural beauties.
A highlight of the spectualr Cal Madow range in the region's northeast, the forest sits on an escarpment at an elevation of approximately 800 metres
in the wettest part of Somaliland. it is part of the ogo mountains.
Daallo is a prime example of an unspoiled wildreness, a dense forest on a limestone and gypsum escarpment near to the base of Mount Shimbiris, Somaliland tallest peak.
Daallo, has historially been inhabited by the ancient ancestors of most of the original somali tribes.
some of the trees in the park are over 1000 years old. Many plants from the park have medicinal value.

Berbera

Berbera is Somaliland's only sheltered seaport, a stories and now partly ruined city that sits amidst the beautiful beaches and deserts of the Gulf of Aden's southern shore.
For this reason, its the economic center of Somaliland, attracting most of the trade that takes place in the country.
A key part in Somaliland's vision for itself as a country in its right. Berbera's real frontier city, and serves as a wonderful point from which to explore the islands and beaches.
The primary reason for visiting the city rather is to absorb the culture and lifestyle. Today, much of the city is simply crumbling buildings and mud-thatch houses.

Gacan Libah

Gacan libah is mountain range, archaelogical site, and national park located in the Maroodi Jeex region of Somaliland.
Nearby are the Golis Mountains, its upper slopes are the source of the seasonal Togdheer river that flows through the city of Burao into the Nugaal Valley.
Gacan Libah is not far grom Laas geel and around 100KM(62 mi) east of the provinical capital Hargeisa. It is in the western part of the northern mountains,
which extended east and west parallel to the northern coast of the Horn of Africa.
The site features a number of caves adorned with rock art of animals and other figures.
As no major archaelogical excavation has been conducted here, the Gacan Libah paintings are of uncertain origin, purpose and date.

Saylac

Saylac or Zeila is a historical coastal town located in the Salal region of Somaliland. the city is located in the northeast of Awdal region, and is very close to the country of Djibouti,
which is about 120KM away. The city of Saylac, which is ancient and has a long history, is currently the capital of the Selel regio, a new region named by the government of Somaliland.
Saylac is recognized as having existed since before the emergence of Islam, which is the place with th longest history on the African continent.
While there are many historical places that reflect the history of Horn of Africa, especially Somaliland. It has been quoted from Roman and Greek explorers that in the
1st centuary saylac was built and had a capital administration a high level of leadership. Since the begining of the emergence of Islam the city of Saylac
was the home of education, commerce, culture, civilazation, and royal administration.

Sacadadiin Island

Sacdadiin Island is a rare places in the horn of africa as well as the golf of adden and the whole red sea from cape guardafue to sherma where the fish comes to lay down the eggs.
It has beautifull environment with diverse sea animal species and coral reefs.
The Sa’ad ad-Din Islands are well known for their splendid coral reefs similar to those found on the southern coast of Oman. These reefs are the most diverse
and well formed coral reefs on the coast of the Gulf of Aden and possibly the largest in the region. From provincial counts,
ninety-nine different species of coral from forty-three different generas have been found on the islands.
There are also a hundred and thirty-two different species of coral fish found around the archipelago. Many of these species include those also found in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean.
The island of Sa’ad ad-Din and Aibat (called Ceebaad in Somali) both are sites of major bird colonies. On the island of Sa’ad ad-Din alone, there were more than 100,000 breeding pairs recorded.

Bulhar

Bulhar is a historic port town in the Sahil region of Somaliland with routes dating back to antiquity. The port was rejuvenated in the 19th century and was a rival to nearby Berbera.
The site is believed to correspond with the ancient commercial Port of Isis described by the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder. Pliny also associated the area with the toponym Abalito,
which Said M-Shidad Hussein writes is likely the Avalite of the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea.

Borama

Borama city is situated at northwestern Awdal region of Somaliland. The commercial seat of the province, it is situated near the border with Ethiopia.
During the Middle Ages, Borama was ruled by the Adal Sultanate. It later formed a part of the British Somaliland protectorate in the first half of the 20th century.
According to the UNDP in 2014, the city had a population of around 398,609 making it one of the largest cities inside Somaliland.
It has been a leading example in community organizing, having been the first area in Somaliland to adopt a self-help scheme in the wake of the civil war

Ceel Sheikh

Ceel Sheikh is a coastal settlement in the western edge of the Sahil region of Somaliland.
Ceel Sheikh was also known historically as Buurta Almis or Jebel Amis after the nearby Mount Almis just south of the settlement.
It was a well known landmark to navigators and legendary Arab explorer Ahmad ibn Mājid wrote of Ceel Sheikh and a few other notable landmarks and ports of the northern Somali coast,
including Berbera, Siyara, the Sa'ad ad-Din islands aka the Zeila Archipelago near Zeila, Alula, Maydh, Ruguda, Heis and El-Darad. Richard Burton visited the settlement and noted the mountain in his map.

Sheikh

A beautiful place to visit in Somaliland is the town of Sheikh. It’s high up in the mountains and is easily accessible from both Hargeisa and Berbera.
The view from the Sheikh Pass is spectacular, as the mountains cascade into the horizon.
The ascent here from Berbera along the Sheikh Pass follows one of the most dramatic roads in Somaliland, starting from the village of Hudisa at the base of the Golis Range,
and then climbing some 700m over a 10km series of switchbacks that offer fantastic views of the plains below.
