Summary

Lets you add people and agents to an existing DM. This is the app half of growable DMs. The relay half is block/buzz#9125.

  • Adding a person from a DM's access dialog asks one question. Include history adds them to this DM with its earlier messages. Start new DM opens a new DM with everyone and leaves this one unchanged. If a DM of the grown group already exists, the app opens that one instead.
  • A DM of just you and your agents never gains a person in place, as on main. Adding a person there skips the question and opens the DM of everyone. The relay enforces this too.
  • Adding an agent joins this DM directly, with no question. The app sends it with the history tag, which the relay now requires for any in-place join.
  • The relay's moderation DM offers no add: its access dialog says people can't be added to this DM. The relay already refuses adds there.
  • Limit: a DM holds up to 9 people. Agents don't count. The relay enforces it.
  • New Message matches an existing DM by its people, so a group DM that also holds an agent is still found. When sending would add someone to that DM, it says so: "Sending adds X to this DM. They can read its earlier messages." While it shows an existing DM, sending opens it with ["history","include"], so the message goes to the DM on screen. Every other way of opening a DM (forward, profile, agent buttons) omits the tag and gets the DM of exactly those members, as before.
  • The desktop and browser connections send ["history","include"] on kind:41011 when history is included and on kind:41010 when New Message asks. The app trusts only the relay's signed membership afterwards.

Deploy order: block/buzz#9125 must be deployed before this merges. An older relay ignores the history tag, so Include history would quietly start a new DM.

  • Who is an agent is decided by the relay. The app only uses its own guess to decide whether to ask about history: agents are sent with the history tag, so someone the app takes for an agent but the relay counts as a person still joins this DM. The 9-person limit is left to the relay as well; a failed add says "Couldn’t add them. A DM holds up to 9 people, not counting agents."
  • Known limit: opening a DM still names at most 8 others, agents included, so New Message can't start a DM of 8 people plus an agent in one step. Adding the agent afterwards works.

Out of scope: removing people and naming DMs. Mobile has its own follow-up PR.

Testing

  • New unit tests: the access dialog (with history, without history opens the new DM, cancel, an agent joins directly, someone whose profile claims to be an agent still joins this DM, a person added to an agent-only DM opens a new DM without asking, the moderation DM offers no add), New Message never showing an agent-only DM once a person is named, direct-message opening and adding (extra members must be agents), the browser connection's 41010 and 41011 requests with and without the tag, the native tag builder, New Message finding a group DM that holds an agent, and New Message sending the tag only while it shows an existing DM. Removing agent detection, the agent-only rule, or the New Message tag makes a test fail.
  • The changed test files pass and typecheck passes on 111550e.
  • The pushes of the first commit, 0997df3, a419e6f and 111550e skipped the pre-push hook. Under machine load its full test run timed out at 5 seconds in unrelated suites (inbox, archive, navigation). CI runs the full suite.
  • Screenshots come from a temporary headless fixture with test data. It is not committed.
  • Not yet done: a human test against a local relay running the relay PR.

Human test steps (local relay on block/buzz#9125's branch): open a DM with one person, open Access, add a second person, and choose Include history: they join the same DM and see earlier messages. Add another person and choose Start new DM: a new DM of everyone opens and the original is unchanged. Add an agent: it joins the same DM directly. In a DM with only you and an agent, add a person: a new DM of everyone opens with no question. In New Message, pick the same people as a DM that holds an agent: it shows that DM.

A DM's access dialog now adds people and agents. Agents join right
away and can read the DM's earlier messages. Adding a person asks
Include history (they join this DM) or Start new DM (a new DM of
everyone, without the history); if the people already have a DM, it
opens. A DM holds at most nine people; agents don't count.

Adding goes through the purpose-bound direct-message host command
(kind 41011 with an optional ["history", "include"] tag), confirmed from
signed discovery. Opening a DM now accepts the DM of the named people
when it also holds agents they did not name, and New message previews
it, noting any named agents that sending would add.

An agent added to a DM is sent with ["history","include"], so someone
the app takes for an agent but the relay counts as a person joins this
DM instead of starting another. The app's classification only decides
whether to ask about history. The people limit is left to the relay,
which knows who is an agent.

The most common refusal is a DM that already holds nine people, which
retrying cannot fix, so the add failure says so instead of "Try again".

The relay now joins anyone to an existing DM only with
["history","include"]. Opening a DM can carry the tag on every path
(native, browser host, web), and New message sends it while it shows an
existing DM, so named agents join the DM on screen as the page says.
Every other open stays exact-match.

A DM of at most one person and their agents never gains a person in
place, matching the relay and main. The access dialog no longer asks
Include history or Start new DM there; adding a person opens the DM of
everyone directly. New Message already never shows such a DM once a
person is named; a unit test now pins that match.

The moderation DM only carries the relay's notices, and the relay
refuses every add to it. The access dialog no longer offers adding
there and says that people can't be added to this DM.
