🖤 BLACKSTART

BLACKSTART is an independent engineering organization focused on building foundational tools, systems, and resources for developers.

We design software that starts from zero — fast, deterministic, and transparent — with an emphasis on system-level clarity, developer experience, and long-term reliability.

What We Build

BLACKSTART creates and maintains:

  • ⚙️ Developer tools (CLI / TUI / system utilities)
  • 🧩 Starter projects & templates
  • 📦 Libraries and internal frameworks
  • 🔌 Plugins and integrations
  • 📚 Technical resources and references
  • 🧠 Infrastructure and workflow primitives

Our projects are designed to work across platforms and environments, with minimal assumptions and maximum control.

Philosophy

A blackstart is the process of restoring a system from a total blackout — no dependencies, no running services, no guarantees.

That principle defines everything we build.

  • No unnecessary abstractions
  • No hidden state
  • No fragile assumptions

We value clarity over convenience, control over magic, and foundations over shortcuts.

Flagship Project

▸ BLACKSTART

A cross-platform, dependency-free, interactive TUI for provisioning developer environments.

  • One command to run
  • No language runtimes required
  • Transparent execution and live logs
  • Designed to work across operating systems and distributions

From nothing to a working system — intentionally.

Design Principles

All BLACKSTART projects follow these core rules:

  • Deterministic behavior
  • Explicit execution
  • Minimal runtime dependencies
  • Cross-platform support
  • Readable systems over clever tricks

If a tool cannot be understood, it is not finished.

Open Source & Licensing

Most BLACKSTART projects are open source and released under the Apache License 2.0, unless stated otherwise.

The BLACKSTART name and logo are reserved trademarks of the organization.

Contributing

We welcome contributions that align with our philosophy.

Before submitting a pull request:

  • Read the project documentation
  • Keep changes minimal and intentional
  • Prefer clarity over cleverness

Each repository may define additional contribution rules.

Community & Direction

BLACKSTART is not driven by trends or hype cycles. We build tools meant to remain useful years from now.

If that resonates with you, you’re in the right place.
