NABat Monitoring in MNA 2025

During the 2025 field season, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) deployed acoustic monitoring equipment at eight locations across their Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) as part of the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat). Recording units collected full-spectrum bat calls between May and September 2025, generating a total sampling effort that was processed through both automated classification systems (Kaleidoscope and SonoBat) and manual verification by certified bat acoustics specialists. Manual verification confirmed the presence of five bat species across the monitoring locations: hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus), eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis), and little brown Myotis (Myotis lucifugus) were detected at all eight sites, while silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) were confirmed at seven of eight locations, and northern Myotis (Myotis septentrionalis) were detected at a single site. All manually verified recordings followed NABat protocols and have been uploaded to WildTrax for long-term data archiving and future analysis.
