This PR seems to contain several unrelated changes - would you consider splitting them up? That way you don't need 3 reviewers looking over all changes, and get feedback on the individual ideas much faster
I would also suggest to put the necessary pins manually in requirements.txt for now (i.e. updated cloudvolume) to avoid additional side effects from all the unrelated package updates.
