Istead of using $HOME/Desktop, read the user dirs configuration under $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs (or under $XDG_CONFIG_HOME). This is necessary to work in localized environments. E.g. in a hungarian Ubuntu, the location of the desktop directory is ~/Asztal.
