Understanding 35mm Equivalent Focal Length

What is 35mm equivalent focal length? The 35mm equivalent (also called 135 format equivalent) focal length is a standardized way to express the field of view of lenses across different sensor sizes. It answers the question: "What focal length on a full-frame (35mm) camera would give the same field of view as this lens on my camera?"

Why do we need 35mm equivalence?

Since the dawn of digital photography, cameras have used various sensor sizes, making it difficult to compare lenses directly. For example, a 25mm lens on a Micro Four Thirds camera captures approximately the same field of view as a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera. The 35mm equivalent provides a universal reference point for understanding how "wide" or "telephoto" a lens will appear regardless of the camera system.

How is 35mm equivalent focal length calculated?

The calculation uses the ratio of the sensor's diagonal measurement compared to a full-frame sensor:

35mm Equivalent = Actual Focal Length × (43.3mm ÷ Sensor Diagonal)

Where 43.3mm is the diagonal measurement of a 35mm full-frame sensor (36mm × 24mm).

Why do manufacturers sometimes provide different equivalent focal lengths?

Some manufacturers may calculate equivalence based on:

  • Diagonal ratio (most common, most mathematically correct)
  • Horizontal ratio (useful for comparing horizontal field of view)
  • Vertical ratio (rarely used)
  • Crop factor (slightly rounded approximation)

For marketing purposes, manufacturers typically use diagonal equivalence as it results in the highest number, making telephoto lenses appear more powerful (e.g., "600mm equivalent reach!").

How do different aspect ratios affect equivalence?

When comparing sensors with different aspect ratios (e.g., 3:2 vs 4:3), the equivalent focal length will vary slightly depending on which dimension you prioritize:

Example: When converting from a 4:3 Micro Four Thirds sensor (17.3mm × 13.0mm) to a 3:2 full-frame sensor (36mm × 24mm):

  • Diagonal equivalence: 2.0× (most common)
  • Horizontal equivalence: 2.08× (36mm ÷ 17.3mm)
  • Vertical equivalence: 1.85× (24mm ÷ 13.0mm)

This explains why some sources might list slightly different crop factors for the same sensor.
