Narrative structure

“Destroy the Enemy Army!”

In the game, you take control of Super Joe. He is the main character, a commando (a soldier specially trained for carrying out raids). At the start of the game (as well as when you lose all lives and continue playing from the area you died at), you (we will assume that you are Super Joe since you decide his movements) are armed with a rifle and a supply of 5 hand grenades. The ammunition of your sub-machine gun won’t run out (it is unlimited), but you will have to restock grenades by picking them throughout your way if you don’t want to face further danger with only having the ability to fire one bullet at a time. It may be useful to know that some obstacles aka enemies that you will encounter can only be removed via throwing them a grenade. Also, while you can shoot in any of the eight directions that Super Joe faces, grenades can only be thrown in front of Super Joe (the character will automatically change the direction he is facing when you press the ‘throwing a grenade’ key to look towards the top of the screen).

Since you are a commando, your objective is to “Destroy the Enemy Army!”, which can be resumed in running forward and shooting everyone and everything that stands in your way and tries to stop you from reaching the end of the area (where you will have to fight several enemies until you are allowed to proceed to the next area). There are 4 missions in the game, each one containing 4 areas. All the missions have the same-looking 4 areas, though difficulty increases as you progress and minor modifications are applied to the areas. For example, secret room locations are changed (as well as their interiors). These rooms can be accessed through certain hidden ladders or doors of enemy constructions, and contain from items which may be very handy to terrible enemies and challenging puzzles.

On your journey, you will come upon many items, too, which can be uncovered by going over them, throwing a grenade at their spot, killing certain enemies or, as just said, they are laid out completely visible in secret rooms or at the outside. Note that items dropped by enemies only give you bonus points. Still, the most powerful sort of items is the well-known power-ups, only given by prisoners. Prisoners are distributed all over the areas (each area has got a different quantity of them), and they play an essential role in the whole adventure. Freeing them means either obtaining a power-up or earning points. Both things are decisive to determine your survival when approaching more complicated missions; power-ups will make Super Joe even more super strong and points will give him additional lives (which for sure will be welcomed).

If you haven’t come to the conclusion yet, Commando is not easy at all. Avoid vehicles which kamikaze themselves at you, try not to fall off edges, entertain a commander and several soldiers at the end of each stage until they get bored of you and let you pass through the gate or go ahead and kill them all, find the way out of gas rooms unless you want to die in a countdown of ten seconds… And do it 4 times (remember the 4 missions?). Let your and Super Joe’s journey begin, here is the story’s plotline:

Commando's plotline

Analysis of each level

[Our study is strictly focused on the FIRST MISSION of the game, so it analysis its levels from 1 to 4]
*Secret rooms are not explained in this section. To check them with full detail read Gameplay.

Area 1

Super Joe steps off the helicopter – 2 Soldiers try to kill you with knives (one coming from the left side of the screen and the other from the right) – you can rescue a Prisoner held by two Soldiers (the three of them walk in a straight line)* – a Moto crosses the bridge and sometimes throws you grenades – Soldiers hiding behind barricades throwing you grenades and Soldiers hiding behind stones with rifles – you can rescue 2 Prisoners tied to two palm trees – Soldiers hiding behind barricades shooting you + more Soldiers hiding behind stones with rifles --> FINAL BATTLE.

FINAL BATTLE: kill the leader and the remaining Soldiers in the screen (they will soon stop generating once you kill the leader) or just keep killing the Soldiers until the leader surrenders and lets you proceed to the next area.
-> Enemies involved: Soldiers (a bunch of them come out from the door) + Crazy green soldier who runs + Green soldier with a shield (he is the leader).

*Hurry! They are taking the prisoner:

Two Soldiers taking a Prisoner

-You have to kill both Soldiers in order to free the Prisoner. It only works if you kill one Soldier after another (this means that you can’t kill any other enemy between the two). Otherwise the second Soldier will disappear and you would not be able to finish your job. -You can only kill the Soldiers using the sub-machine gun. -The amount of points earned is of 1,300 (300 points per Soldier killed + 1,000 for freeing the Prisoner).

Area 2

A Jeep and a Truck cross the screen (the first one top-to-bottom and the second right-to-left) – Soldiers hiding in barricades and throwing you grenades + a Moto getting in your way three times (right-to-left, left-to-right and again right-to-left) – Soldiers with rocket launchers between a broken bridge and a river* (with a wooden bridge) – Grey stone rooms with machine gun turrets inside – 2 files of Green Soldiers with shields --> FINAL BATTLE.

FINAL BATTLE: kill the leader and the remaining Soldiers in the screen (they will soon stop generating once you kill the leader) or just keep killing the Soldiers until the leader surrenders and so you can move on to the next area.
-> Enemies involved: Soldiers (coming out from some of the Cave-like houses but not from the door) + Crazy green soldier who runs + Green soldier with a shield (he is the leader).

*Curious fact:

Soldier in the river

Item dropped by the Soldier

There’s a Soldier in the water who can only be killed by throwing a grenade at him. If you kill him, he will sometimes drop an object, but you can’t pick the object dropped since it lays in the middle of the river (remember you can’t swim).

Area 3

Cubic brown houses from which enemies spawn + Soldiers hiding in barricades throwing you grenades – 4 Soldiers try to kill you with knives (two on the left side and two on the right side of the map) – a Moto crosses the bridge – Soldiers coming out from Cave-like houses (both left and right one spawn a Soldier with knife) – Rows of Stone houses spawning a huge amount of Soldiers --> FINAL BATTLE.

FINAL BATTLE: it is not necessary to kill both Mortars to win the battle and be able to cross the door and step to the next area. Just keep firing the Soldiers until they stop spawning and leave your way free.
-> Enemies involved: Soldiers (a bunch of them come out of the door) + 2 Mortars (they throw you grenades). There is neither a leader nor Crazy green soldier who runs this time.

Area 4

Soldiers with rocket launchers – bridges to cross black holes (+ 2 Soldiers with rocket launchers + 2 Mortars) – road (+ Car driving left-to-right + Motorbike riding right-to-left) (+ White Tent + double Mortars) – Surveillance Towers --> FINAL BATTLE.

FINAL BATTLE: you don’t have to kill the three soldiers behind the windows since they are not leaders. Free your way killing Soldiers so they stop spawning. Be careful, the area to fight them is very small.
-> Enemies involved: Soldiers (they come out in a greater number than in the previous areas) + Crazy green soldier who runs + 3 Green Soldiers with rifles. There is neither any leader.

When you end an area:

  • You get 5,000 points for completing an area (only areas 1, 2 and 3. You don’t get points for completing area number 4).
  • You also get 1,000 extra points for each prisoner you’ve rescued in that area. Also, if you do a PERFECT RESCUE (it means that you’ve rescued all the prisoners of the area), you earn a SPECIAL BONUS of 20,000 points.
  • Number of prisoners in the areas: area 1 (10 prisoners), area 2 (10), area 3 (20), area 4 (10).

Difficulty

In relation to difficulty, this increases gradually from area to area, but makes big jumps when moving to later missions. Since all the areas in the four missions have the same landscape, for developers playing with difficulty was key to keep the game fresh. Successfully completing a mission means “going back” to maps with the exact same landscape as the ones in the first mission, but thanks to minor changes in their physical layout, they are still funny to play. Although these changes can mainly be seen “underground”, because they affect the location of secret ladders and also their interiors, they result in more possibilities for exploration. The other kind of modifications made refers to enemy’s behaviour. For example, at the start of the 2nd of the 1st mission, a jeep drives in a straight, vertical line towards you (not too complicated to avoid), while in the same area of the 2nd mission, the jeep changes constantly its x position trying to run over you. Throughout the missions, enemies evolve the following way:

  • Second mission: the new difficulty shows in an increase in the quantity of soldiers rushing from both sides of the screen.
  • Third mission: enemies are harder. AI is augmented (enemies are clever) and they fire at a very fast rate.
  • Fourth mission: because it is the hardest difficulty, soldiers go super-fast and it is nearly impossible to avoid them/shoot them.

Gameplay

*The word ‘die’ here means ‘lose a life’, not ‘lose all of player’s lives’ (if not specified).

Game modes

Commando has got ‘1 PLAYER’ mode and ‘2 PLAYERS’ mode. The only different between the two game modes is that in the first one you play alone, whereas in the second one the game is played in turns. ‘2 PLAYERS’ mode can be explained the following way: first, player one takes control of his Super Joe. When he dies, it becomes the turn of the second player, who will play with “another” Super Joe. This means that there will be two separated games in the same game, if that makes sense, which also implies two different scores, two different checkpoints (from which players star playing when they die), etc. Maybe the first player reaches the end of the second area, but the second player can’t even make it to the first final battle. This constant ‘plays player 1 – player 1 dies – plays player 2 – player 2 dies – plays player 1 – player 1 dies, etc.’ lasts until the second player loses all of his lives.

For the two modes, Commando also offers the option to continue a saved game. These options are ‘1P CONT’ and ‘2P CONT’, and give you the chance not to start playing from mission 1 area 1 every time you run out of lives (would anybody beat the game if so?).

General rules & mechanics

[Basic mechanics regarding player’s character (Super Joe) have been described in Narrative structure]
[Because in ‘2 PLAYERS’ mode players never play together in the same screen, the rules that the game implements don’t change from ‘1 PLAYER’ mode]

  • You start playing with 5 Grenades. If you die, regardless of the number of Grenades you had previously, this restarts to 5.
  • When you die or move from a mission to a next, you lose any power-ups or these items: Binoculars, Bulletproof Vest, Super Grenade or Flashlight.
  • When you move from an area to a next, you keep power-ups and the items named before (if you carry them, of course).
  • When moving from an area/mission to a next, your lives and grenades carry on.
  • You die when an enemy itself or an enemy grenade or bullet touches you (at one hit). Bullets coming from your back will kill you, too.
  • When you reappear, you can’t stop the game unless you have pressed the ‘walk’ key once.
  • Items are always at the same place (if you play a lot you can end memorizing these spots, so it will be easier to you to grab the items).
  • Most object icons glow.
  • You start playing with 3 lives.
  • You get an extra life once you reach 20,000 points (not every 20,000 points). You then get one extra life every 100,000 points (at 120,000, 220,000...).
  • The points you get for killing enemies if you have a power-up on are the same that the points you would get if you didn't have the power-up/s.

Checkpoints

  • When you are going through screens, you can’t go back. If you want to do so, you have two options: to die (you will reappear at your last checkpoint) or to get inside a secret room (when coming up, you may reappear a few metres before its entrance).
  • Checkpoints are set at specific points* in the maps. These points are always the same.
  • If you die and reappear, any enemies different than “normal” Soldiers, secret rooms and other items near the checkpoint will no longer be there, so don’t get mad if, for instance, a hidden ladder doesn’t show even though you are desperately throwing grenades at its location. This is the case of the secret room m) from the third area.

*The ‘don’t fall in the barricade!’ checkpoint:

Checkpoint in front of a barricade from area 2

In the second area, there is a checkpoint which is made extremely close to a Barricade (only a few millimetres separate the Barricade from you). Since the Barricade is in front of you, when you start moving your character, you shall first go backwards and go around the barricade to avoid it. Otherwise, if you try to walk towards the front of the screen, you will immediately fall in the barricade and die (and this may happen to you several times until you realize what’s happening there).

Non-player characters

  • Enemies will only kill you if Super Joe is facing their direction (some enemies will come to you from the back and then turn back to be face-to-face with Super Joe and kill him instantly).
  • Some Soldiers spawn infinitely.
  • Soldiers disappear after a certain time of being spawned.

Secret rooms

The player is not forced to visit secret rooms to complete areas and missions, though they are the only way to get power-ups and some other really cool items, and to free all the prisoners in the areas since the majority of them are found in these rooms. In relation to how you get inside them, there are two types of secret rooms:

a) The room is accessed by a secret hidden ladder. These ladders are totally hidden in maps and won’t show unless you throw a grenade at their spot (they are all on the floor). Afterwards, the player has the possibility to go down the ladder into the underground shelter.

b) The room is accessed through a normal door of a house. In this case, you won’t have to throw any grenades to unlock the entrance of the room. The door will be visible in the map, but nobody will tell you which door is an entrance of a secret room.

Facts about secret rooms

  • Secret rooms with Prisoners inside don’t contain any dangerous enemies.
  • Leaving a secret room involves reappearing at some checkpoint.
  • In some rooms the exit ladder is not shown – you have to throw a grenade at its spot if you want to unlock it.
  • You get 300 points for unlocking a secret ladder with a grenade (this ladder can be the entrance of some secret room or the exit ladder).

You can’t go back to all secret rooms because:

Reason 1: some checkpoints after leaving a room are made further of the entrance of that room.
Reason 2: checkpoints are made so close to the entrance of the secret room and this entrance disappears.

If you go back to a secret room:

  • Freed Prisoners and items picked won’t be there anymore.
  • Enemies will respawn and be there again (even though you killed them last time). Enemies also include Daggers.

List of secret rooms from mission 1 (all areas)

[Secret rooms from each area have been given a letter, having the first one of each area letter a]
[If you can’t go back to a secret room, it is said in its description. If the description says nothing about it, you can go back to it]
