Strata Cognitive Kernel v1.0
A deterministic, event-sourced cognitive execution kernel for structured, verifiable computation.
⸻
Overview
Strata Cognitive Kernel is a deterministic computation substrate designed to model structured cognition through explicit events, layered transformation pipelines, and fully replayable execution history.
It is not an agent system, not a learning model, and not an LLM runtime.
Instead, it provides a verifiable execution foundation on which higher-level systems (agents, interfaces, reasoning layers) can be safely built.
Every computation in Strata is:
- event-driven
- fully deterministic
- replayable
- traceable across all layers
⸻
Core Design Principles
- Determinism First
Given identical inputs and event history, Strata always produces identical outputs.
There is:
- no randomness
- no time-dependent logic in execution paths
- no hidden state mutation
- no probabilistic decision-making
⸻
- Event-Sourced Architecture
All system state is derived from an append-only event log.
- State is never mutated directly
- All changes are expressed as events
- Entire system state can be reconstructed via replay
⸻
- Layer Isolation
The system is strictly divided into independent layers:
- Kernel (event system)
- Ontology (entities + relationships)
- Semantic layer (intent interpretation)
- Goal system (predicate evaluation)
- Executive layer (goal coordination)
- Policy layer (intent scoring)
- Execution layer (command mapping)
- Trace system (immutable execution record)
- Coherence system (integrity verification)
- Memory system (aggregated state influence)
- ABI registry (contract system)
- Capability registry (system surface definition)
- CLI interface (external interaction)
Each layer communicates only through defined structures.
⸻
- Verifiability & Replayability
Every execution is:
- fully traceable
- fully replayable
- invariant-checked
- structurally auditable
Strata can reconstruct system state entirely from event history.
⸻
Architecture Overview
Strata executes all inputs through a deterministic multi-stage pipeline:
Input ↓ Semantic Interpretation ↓ Event Translation ↓ Goal Evaluation ↓ Executive Coordination ↓ Policy Scoring & Ranking ↓ Execution Adapter ↓ Trace Recording ↓ Coherence Verification ↓ Memory Update ↓ Kernel State Projection
This pipeline is:
- strictly ordered
- non-skippable
- deterministic
- fully traceable
⸻
Key Features
Deterministic Execution Kernel
All operations are deterministic and reproducible.
Event-Sourced State Model
System state is derived entirely from immutable event history.
Goal System (Predicate-Based)
Goals are evaluated using structured predicates over kernel state.
Executive Coordination Layer
Deterministically selects and prioritizes goals using policy + memory weighting.
Policy Scoring System
Intents are scored using:
- semantic alignment
- ontology matching
- rule alignment
- memory influence
- historical weighting
Memory System
Aggregates execution history and influences future policy scoring (without altering kernel logic).
Trace System
Every execution produces a complete immutable trace across all pipeline stages.
Coherence Verification
System integrity is validated across execution, policy, memory, and kernel consistency checks.
ABI Contract System
Versioned, frozen schema contracts ensuring structural consistency.
Capability Registry
Declarative definition of all system capabilities (immutable post-init).
CLI Interface
Provides deterministic interaction with the kernel:
- run
- replay
- inspect
- verify
- goals
- memory
⸻
Determinism Guarantees
Strata guarantees:
- identical output for identical inputs + event history
- deterministic ordering via BTreeMap/BTreeSet
- stable floating-point comparisons via bitwise equality
- full replay consistency across executions
- no hidden or implicit state changes
⸻
Build & Execution Model
Strata is designed for reproducible execution environments.
Release Build
scripts/build-release.sh
- isolated temporary build directory
- fully cleaned after execution
- produces minimal binary (~718 KB)
- no persistent target/ artifacts
⸻
Test Execution
scripts/test-release.sh
- isolated execution environment
- no persistent artifacts
- deterministic test behavior
- full cleanup on exit
⸻
System Guarantees
Kernel Integrity
- event-sourced architecture preserved
- no direct state mutation outside kernel rules
- strict replay consistency
ABI Stability
- frozen after initialization
- versioned contracts
- deterministic serialization
Capability Safety
- immutable capability registry
- explicit system surface definition
Observability Safety
- logging does not affect execution
- log levels are externally controlled
- no semantic impact from debug output
⸻
What Strata Is
Strata is:
- a deterministic cognition execution kernel
- a structured event-sourced computation system
- a verifiable state machine for layered decision pipelines
- a reproducible computation substrate
⸻
What Strata Is NOT
Strata is NOT:
- an autonomous agent
- a learning system
- a probabilistic AI system
- an LLM runtime
- a self-directed intelligence system
Any such systems must be built externally above this kernel layer.
⸻

Final Note
Strata is intentionally designed as a kernel, not a product.
It provides the lowest reliable layer on which structured cognitive systems can be built without losing determinism or traceability.
