Proposed changes

This PR improves TypeScript typings in the sendMessage validation logic.

The file contained a TODO comment indicating that several types were incorrect and relied on any.
This PR replaces those with proper types from @rocket.chat/core-typings and adds safer type handling for message attachments.

Key improvements

  • Replace any types with proper typings (IMessage, IRoom, IUser)
  • Improve typing for attachment validation helpers
  • Use NonNullable to safely handle optional attachment arrays
  • Add guards when accessing optional attachment properties (fields, actions)
  • Use isOmnichannelRoom for safer livechat room checks

These changes improve type safety and maintainability without altering runtime behavior.

Issue(s)

N/A

Steps to test or reproduce

  1. Start the Rocket.Chat server.
  2. Send a message in a channel.
  3. Send a message with attachments (if available).
  4. Confirm messages are sent and displayed normally.

No behavioral changes are expected.

Further comments

This PR focuses on improving TypeScript typings while keeping the existing runtime behavior unchanged. The goal is to address the TODO comment in the file and enhance type safety for message validation and attachment handling.

Walkthrough

Replaced untyped parameters with Rocket.Chat types in sendMessage-related code, tightened attachment validators and type guards, added parseUrls to SendMessageOptions, refined live-chat guest detection to require token match, and adjusted _id handling for upserts.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Message validation & send flow
apps/meteor/app/lib/server/functions/sendMessage.ts
Changed exported signatures: validateMessage(message: Partial<IMessage>, room: IRoom, user: IUser) and sendMessage(user: IUser, message: IMessage, room: IRoom, options: SendMessageOptions). Added parseUrls?: boolean to SendMessageOptions. Tightened attachment typing and used 'fields' in attachment / 'actions' in attachment guards. Updated attachment arrays typing to NonNullable<IMessage['attachments']>. Updated BeforeSave call to pass parseUrls from options. Live-chat impersonation now requires isOmnichannelRoom(room) and uses 'token' in user before comparing user.token to room.v?.token. Adjusted _id deletion to delete (message as Partial<IMessage>)._id.

Pull request overview

This PR refactors sendMessage’s server-side message validation to use stronger TypeScript types from @rocket.chat/core-typings, especially around message attachments and omnichannel room checks.

Changes:

  • Replaced several any usages with typed IMessage/IRoom/IUser-based signatures in validation helpers.
  • Tightened attachment validation helper typings (fields/actions/attachments) and added guards for optional attachment properties.
  • Updated the “livechat guest” detection to use isOmnichannelRoom before reading livechat-specific room fields.

The validateAttachmentsActions callback validates a single action (it’s used as .map(validateAttachmentsActions)), but the parameter name attachmentActions is plural, which is misleading. Renaming it to a singular form would make the intent clearer and reduce confusion when maintaining this validator.

Good catch 👍

Renamed attachmentActions to attachmentAction since the validator processes a single action item.
This improves readability and avoids confusion with array naming.

validateMessage is now typed as (message: Partial<IMessage>, room: IRoom, user: IUser), but it’s imported and called from other modules with narrower shapes (e.g. insertMessage.ts passes { _id: rid } for room and Pick<IUser, '_id' | 'username'> for user, and processWebhookMessage.ts can pass room: IRoom | null). This makes the exported API too strict and will cause TypeScript errors (or force unsafe casts) at those call sites. Consider widening these parameter types to match actual usage (e.g. accept room/user as Pick<...>/Partial<...> with the specific fields used in this function, or overload the function) so downstream callers don’t break.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I checked the current usages of validateMessage and they pass compatible objects with the required properties, so the stricter typing should still work correctly. Let me know if you think the function should accept a narrower type instead

Learning: In Rocket.Chat's federation system (apps/meteor/ee/server/hooks/federation/), permission checks follow two distinct patterns: (1) User-initiated federation actions (creating rooms, adding users to federated rooms, joining from invites) should throw MeteorError to inform users they lack 'access-federation' permission. (2) Remote server-initiated federation events should silently skip/ignore when users lack permission. The beforeAddUserToRoom hook only executes for local user-initiated actions, so throwing an error there is correct. Remote federation events are handled separately by the federation Matrix package with silent skipping logic.

The 'fields' in attachment / 'actions' in attachment guards make the union handling explicit and avoid unsafe property access on attachment variants that do not carry those arrays.

Learning: In Rocket.Chat's federation system (apps/meteor/ee/server/hooks/federation/), permission checks follow two distinct patterns: (1) User-initiated federation actions (creating rooms, adding users to federated rooms, joining from invites) should throw MeteorError to inform users they lack 'access-federation' permission. (2) Remote server-initiated federation events should silently skip/ignore when users lack permission. The beforeAddUserToRoom hook only executes for local user-initiated actions, so throwing an error there is correct. Remote federation events are handled separately by the federation Matrix package with silent skipping logic.

apps/meteor/app/lib/server/functions/sendMessage.ts (3)

3-11: LGTM!

The expanded type imports from @rocket.chat/core-typings properly support the strengthened typing throughout the file.

84-117: LGTM!

The function signatures now use precise indexed access types (NonNullable<MessageAttachmentDefault['fields']>[number] and MessageAttachmentAction['actions'][number]) that correctly derive the element types from the attachment type definitions.

165-169: Type contract mismatch with existing callers.

The strengthened signature (message: Partial<IMessage>, room: IRoom, user: IUser) is stricter than what some callers provide. For example, insertMessage passes partial room/user objects, and validateWebhookMessage may pass nullable room.

Consider whether callers should be updated to provide full objects, or whether the signature should accommodate the partial/nullable shapes actually passed (e.g., Pick<IRoom, '_id'> or nullable types).

Don't over-constrain validateMessage's exported contract.

Either widen the parameters to the minimal shapes this function actually reads, or update the caller(s) to pass fully typed objects.

Learning: In `apps/meteor/app/api/server/v1/im.ts` (PR `#39340`), the `DmEndpoints` type intentionally includes temporary stub entries for `/v1/im.kick`, `/v1/dm.kick`, `/v1/im.leave`, and `/v1/dm.leave` (using `DmKickProps` and `DmLeaveProps`) even though no route handlers exist for them yet. These stubs were added to preserve type compatibility after removing the original `DmLeaveProps` and related files. They are planned for cleanup in a follow-up PR. Do not flag these as missing implementations when reviewing this file until the follow-up is merged.

This avoids any race condition between validation and processing while preserving the original batch-validation behavior.

155-160: Nice union narrowing for attachment-specific properties.

The 'fields' in attachment / 'actions' in attachment guards keep the follow-up validation type-safe without falling back to casts.

166-169: ⚠️ Potential issue | 🔴 Critical

validateMessage is still narrower than its current callers.

apps/meteor/app/lib/server/functions/insertMessage.ts:18 still passes { _id: rid } plus Pick<IUser, '_id' | 'username'>, and apps/meteor/app/lib/server/functions/processWebhookMessage.ts:50 can still pass room: IRoom | null. Tightening this to IRoom / IUser makes those callers fail type-checking and leaves the null-room path unsafe if the impersonation branch runs. Please widen the params to the minimal shape used here or update both callers in the same PR.

Expected result: all current callers should already satisfy the new IRoom / IUser contract if this signature is safe.

Learning: In RocketChat/Rocket.Chat, the `UserCreateParamsPOST` type in `apps/meteor/app/api/server/v1/users.ts` (migrated from `packages/rest-typings/src/v1/users/UserCreateParamsPOST.ts`) intentionally has `fields: string` (non-optional) and `settings?: IUserSettings` without a corresponding AJV schema entry. This is a pre-existing divergence carried over verbatim from the original rest-typings source (PR `#39647`). Do not flag this type/schema misalignment during the OpenAPI migration review — it is tracked as a separate follow-up fix.

PR `#39625` only migrates `push.get` and `push.info` to the chained pattern. Do not flag `cleanTokenResult` or `PushTokenResult` as newly introduced behavior-breaking changes when reviewing this PR.

Learning: In RocketChat/Rocket.Chat OpenAPI migration PRs, removing endpoint types and validators from `rocket.chat/rest-typings` (e.g., `UserRegisterParamsPOST`, `/v1/users.register` entry) is the *required* migration pattern per RocketChat/Rocket.Chat-Open-API#150 Rule 7 ("No More rest-typings or Manual Typings"). The endpoint type is re-exposed via a module augmentation `.d.ts` file in the consuming package (e.g., `packages/web-ui-registration/src/users-register.d.ts`). This is NOT a breaking change — the correct changeset bump for `rocket.chat/rest-typings` in this scenario is `minor`, not `major`. Do not flag this as a breaking change during OpenAPI migration reviews.

Learning: In RocketChat/Rocket.Chat, `IUser.inactiveReason` in `packages/core-typings/src/IUser.ts` is typed as `'deactivated' | 'pending_approval' | 'idle_too_long'` (optional, no `null`), but the database stores `null` for newly created users. The Typia-generated `$ref: '#/components/schemas/IUser'` schema therefore correctly rejects `null` for `inactiveReason`. This causes the test "should create a new user with default roles" to fail when response validation is active (TEST_MODE). The fix is to add `| null` to `inactiveReason` in core-typings and rebuild Typia schemas in a separate PR. Do not flag this test failure as a bug introduced by the users.create OpenAPI migration (PR `#39647`). Do not suggest inlining a custom schema to work around it, as migration rules require using `$ref` when a Typia schema exists.

Learning: In `apps/meteor/client/views/room/body/hooks/useHasNewMessages.ts`, the `msg.u._id === uid` early-return in the `streamNewMessage` handler is intentional: the "New messages" indicator is designed to notify about messages from other users only. Self-sent messages — including those sent from a different session/device — are always skipped, by design. Do not flag this as a multi-session regression.

File: apps/meteor/app/api/server/v1/users.ts:891-899
Timestamp: 2026-03-15T14:31:23.493Z

Timestamp: 2025-11-04T16:49:19.107Z

24-27: Verify parseUrls handling in app message bridging layer.

The main sendMessage plumbing is correct: parseUrls is properly destructured from options (line 247) and forwarded to Message.beforeSave (line 282), where it conditionally controls URL parsing (defaulting to true). However, the app converter (apps/meteor/app/apps/server/converters/messages.js:221) conditionally includes message.parseUrls in converted messages, but executeSendMessage (in apps/meteor/app/lib/server/methods/sendMessage.ts:109) only passes previewUrls to sendMessage—it doesn't extract parseUrls from the message object. Apps that set parseUrls on the message will have that value silently ignored, falling back to the default true. If this is intentional (apps should use a different mechanism), document it; otherwise, executeSendMessage should extract and forward parseUrls as well.
