├── src/drivers/leobog/             # GM3 HID transport and tests
└── src/atk/ + src/drivers/atk/     # VXE R1 macro write, read, and action decoding
  • Adds LEOBOG GM3 support on the wired mouse and 2.4 GHz receiver.
  • Adds GM3 button remapping, onboard profile data, and macro upload support.
  • Completes VXE R1 macro support: ATK HUB-compatible slots, big-endian action delays, macro slot readback, keyboard/wheel decoding, and button binding.
  • Keeps unsupported vendor-only macro actions fail-closed instead of silently overwriting them.

Evidence

  • Before: R1 macro delays were packed little-endian, so 20 ms read as 5120 ms; existing macro slots could not be read back into editable steps.
    After: focused ATK protocol/driver tests pass 114/114, including macro round-trip and unsupported-action rejection.
  • Before: LEOBOG GM3 had no registered driver or protocol entry.
    After: the full mouse-protocol test suite passes 2746/2746, and TypeScript build succeeds.
  • Owner hardware confirmation: VXE R1 SE macro execution works after the delay-endian fix.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

The change is additive and covered by protocol/driver tests, but it expands the public package surface with the new @openmouse/protocol/leobog export.

Blast Radius: broad

OpenMouse will need a published protocol release before it can consume the R1 macro readback API.

Note

Add LEOBOG GM3 driver and VXE R1 macro support

  • Adds a full LEOBOG GM3 protocol package under src/leobog with button-table, onboard-configuration, and macro encode/decode helpers, plus a 520-byte vendor-frame builder and response parsers. Registers the GM3 client in the driver registry and HID filters.
  • Adds VXE R1 (COMPX receiver) support in the ATK driver: button assignment, macro upload and binding, macro-slot clearing, polling-rate and DPI-stage writes, and profile switching that tolerates a missing command echo.
  • Fixes identity gating: an R1 product string or shared CID/MID alone no longer routes non-R1 devices down the R1 path (hid.ts).
  • Documents the reverse-engineered GM3 button/macro protocol and battery telemetry (docs/leobog-gm3.md, docs/leobog-gm3-buttons.md).
  • Risk: leobogGm3WithStageCount in onboard.ts rewrites and zeroes DPI table entries beyond the new count and clamps the active stage; R1 system-row DPI/polling writes now batch read-modify-write and confirm in one queued operation, so check the queue-holding paths in hid.ts for deadlock regressions.

The 2,29 CID/MID entry classifies the ATK A9 3.0 NK (373b:1305, CORE26K) as an R1 SE, causing incorrect DPI options and R1 settings behavior; persistent writes are also rejected by the R1-only transport check. AtkHidClient.identify() selects this global entry by CID/MID, and sensorKey() prefers it over the USB-specific catalog. Scope this R1 override to the R1 USB identities.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds GM3 support and R1 macro/button programming with readback, rollback and overwrite-consent safeguards. Supplied concerns remain about stale replies overwriting GM3 settings and bound R1 buttons executing partially uploaded macros; these need resolution before relying on the write paths.

Correct the status-refresh interval to two seconds.

The status-refresh section says OpenMouse polls every second. The driver sets pollIntervalMs to 2,000 ms, and a later section of the same document says the interval is two seconds. Readers who rely on the first statement expect DPI changes up to twice as fast as the driver delivers.

Serialize the paired-button read-modify-write.

writeR1ButtonRecord reads an eight-byte group, changes one four-byte record, writes the group back, and checks it. run serializes each individual transport call, not this whole sequence. When two calls for different buttons in the same group overlap, the second write can use a stale snapshot. The first call's readback then fails, and its rollback writes its stale snapshot over the second write. Both calls can fail with the message "did not survive readback," even though neither edit was rejected by the device.

Serialize the whole sequence with a lock that is separate from this.queue. Wrapping the body in run would deadlock, because read and write also call run.

Serialize the full read-modify-write and readback sequence in
writeR1ButtonRecord so overlapping assignments cannot use stale snapshots or
overwrite each other during rollback. Use a dedicated lock separate from
this.queue, since read and write already use that queue; keep the existing
sequence intact behind the lock.

Correct the provenance of the Forward and Backward fixture bytes.

The fixture is labeled as captured from hardware, and VERIFIED_ACTIONS lists Forward and Backward as live-confirmed. The restore-defaults table uses those same bytes. The repository docs say these two slots are inferred, not measured. The test therefore cannot detect a wrong binding for either slot. Mark both slots as inferred, or capture them from a live reset.

Cover a non-zero slot in the macro upload test.

The upload test calls setMacro(0, ...) only. FakeGm3 does not record the slot, and the 03 00 frame has no slot field, so the test checks only the local macros mirror. A change that stores every upload at macros[0] still passes. The added test below uploads to slot 2 and checks that only the local macros[2] entry is set. It does not verify which slot the device uses.

Suggested test
test("stores an upload in the requested local macro slot", async () => {
  const fake = new FakeGm3(LEOBOG_GM3_RECEIVER_PRODUCT_ID);
  const device = client(fake);
  await device.setMacro(2, "OM2", OM2_STEPS);

Assert the decoded label in the R1 button test.

The loop checks only the checksum and the catalog lookup. Both pass when the value1 bytes of left-click and right-click are swapped. The decoder derives labels from its own table, so comparing decoded?.label with action.label fails on such a swap. The current catalog passes this assertion for all 13 entries.

Assert the address of each macro chunk write.

The macro upload test checks only the number of 0x06 writes and the concatenated payload. Those checks still pass if every chunk is written to the slot start. The upload loop writes each 10-byte chunk at base + offset, so the test should assert those addresses.

Stage macro uploads in an unbound slot.

setR1ButtonMacro writes the slot in 10-byte chunks before it updates the button record. A rejected chunk leaves the earlier chunks in place, so the bound button can run a mix of old and new actions. Stage the macro in a slot that no button references, then bind it only after every chunk succeeds.

Throw on invalid stored macro action counts.

readR1ButtonMacro returns [] for a stored action count above 70. The decoder rejects that count. A caller that reads the slot as empty can overwrite the stored macro, because setR1ButtonMacro replaces the whole slot. Throw for counts above 70 before reading the action table.

Suggested fix

Make leobogGm3ParseConfig try both report ID alignments.

Stripped 44 00 replies with checksum 0x09 are treated as already aligned, so the parser reads the wrong offset and returns null. readOnboard then throws, so a settings write can report failure after the device accepted it. leobogGm3ParseLink already tries both alignments.

Count and write macro names as UTF-16 code units.

For non-ASCII names, nameBytes counts UTF-8 bytes times 2. The writer emits one 16-bit unit per code point. é declares 4 name bytes but writes 2. Astral characters such as emoji lose their high bits. Count and write UTF-16 code units instead, as the documented UTF-16LE layout requires.

Reject negative stepBytes in the macro record decoder.

leobogGm3DecodeMacroRecord accepts a record whose name length exceeds its declared size. The decoder returns a macro with an out-of-record name and no steps instead of null. The doc comment on the function says it returns null when the shape does not match, so this breaks that contract.

The check on line 195 rejects only values that are not multiples of LEOBOG_GM3_MACRO_STEP_BYTES. A negative stepBytes is a multiple of 4 when it equals −4, so the check does not reject it. Add a negative check before that line.

Suggested fix
   const stepBytes = size - 1 - nameBytes;
-  if (stepBytes % LEOBOG_GM3_MACRO_STEP_BYTES !== 0) return null;
+  if (stepBytes < 0 || stepBytes % LEOBOG_GM3_MACRO_STEP_BYTES !== 0) return null;

As per path instructions, the doc comment states the contract: "returns null when the shape does not match."

Silent 20 ms floor rewrites short non-final delays on save.

atkPackAtkR1MacroTable writes every non-final delay below 20 ms as 20 ms, and it does so without a warning. The reader returns stored delays unchanged. A read-then-save cycle can therefore write a different delay than the one read. Steps entered directly through setR1ButtonMacro get the same silent change.

The current behavior hides the change from the caller. Consider rejecting non-final delays below 20 ms with an error, so the caller sees the change before it is written. If the device enforces a 20 ms minimum, document that minimum at the clamp and in the decoder.

Reject runCount for loopCount macros. The option is currently dropped.

setR1ButtonMacro declares runCount as a required option, but the method never reads it. The stored macro table and the button record have no repeat-count field. A loopCount request with runCount: 3 therefore writes the same bytes as runCount: 1, and the caller receives no error.

Reject the unsupported combination until the count can be encoded:

Suggested fix
     if (!Number.isInteger(options.startType) || options.startType < 0 || options.startType > 0xff) {
       throw new Error("The R1 macro start mode must be a byte.");

Check advertised polling rates before writing the 0xf58e system row.

setPollingRate sends 0xf58e to the system-row branch. That branch finds the code for any entry in POLLING_RATES and writes it to the system register. It does not check getSupportedPollingRates(), which returns the rates this receiver advertises. A call such as setPollingRate(4000) therefore writes the 4000 Hz code. The readback check after the write throws if the returned rate differs, so the call can fail after the code has already been written.

Do not treat slot as the device macro index.

setMacro sends a frame with no slot field. Calls with different slot values therefore send identical frames for the same name and steps. The method still stores the upload at this.macros[slot], and the device does not return an index. Button bindings write the caller's slot as the last byte of the binding code, and the documentation says that byte indexes the uploaded macros. The documented sample shows the uploaded index can differ from the panel position: an empty, never-uploaded entry came first, so the next uploaded macro became index 0. A binding built from the local slot can therefore select an empty or different device macro.

Remove the implied mapping from slot to the device index. Either drop the caller-chosen slot from setMacro, or document slot as a local key only, with no relation to the binding index. Do not add a readback step, because no GM3 macro readback exists.

Reset the HID handle when a configuration read fails in apply.

A timed-out read in apply leaves its receiveFeatureReport pending, and apply does not reopen the device. settingsForStatus resets the handle after the same failure, but apply does not. The next queued operation starts at the deadline and issues another receiveFeatureReport while the abandoned receive is still outstanding. The WebHID spec does not serialize these receives. The retry can therefore fail at its own deadline or receive the late reply, depending on browser behavior. Both configuration reads in apply can time out this way, including the post-write verification read. Reopening the device rejects the page's pending receive and starts the next read on a fresh handle.

Thanks — I went through every inline finding. Fixes are in f32f928; the rest are called out below with the reason.

Fixed

src/leobog/

  • A stage the user set to the 100 DPI floor no longer gets refilled when the stage count changes: only stages that were already disabled (stage >= previousStageCount) count as blank. Added a regression test.
  • leobogGm3DecodeOnboard now validates each enabled stage with leobogGm3IsDpiValue; disabled entries stay exempt because they legitimately read back as the floor.
  • Macro names are sized in UTF-16 code units and written with charCodeAt, so non-ASCII names round-trip (a surrogate pair is two units). Tested with é and an emoji.
  • leobogGm3DecodeMacroRecord rejects a negative step count that still divided by four and decoded as an empty macro.
  • leobogGm3ParseConfig tries both report-ID alignments, validating length and command for each.
  • exchange clears the deadline timer when the reply wins. This was the real cause of the healthy-transfer backoff: the losing sleep() left abandonedReceive set 600 ms later.
  • apply() reopens the handle when either read fails, then propagates the original error.
  • Caller messages are now failure wording (The mouse did not keep 500 Hz.). The old text was a success statement thrown as an error; the test was updated.
  • The asleep note is checked before the missing-block note, so a sleeping mouse no longer reads as "not answering its configuration commands".
  • The replayed status refreshes its configuration fields from configCache, so a write made during the backoff does not look like it reverted.

src/atk/

  • Identity (the one that was my regression): ATK_PRODUCTS is keyed on a namespace several models share — "2,29" is both the VXE R1 SE and the ATK A9 3.0 NK, and "2,27"/"2,32" collide the same way. An entry with family: "r1" now only applies on the USB ids the R1 family answers on, so a NearLink mouse keeps its own sensor and does not inherit the R1 codecs. Test added.
  • maxStages honours the full count on the 0xf58e receiver (it already accepted up to R1_MAX_DPI_STAGES).
  • readPollingRate caps the system-row decode at 1000 Hz, and setPollingRate refuses a rate the transport does not advertise before touching REGISTER.system.
  • writeR1ButtonRecord and writeR1GroupDpiStage hold the queue across the whole read-modify-write-verify, via new unqueued read/write/exchange helpers. A second edit can no longer read the row before the first write and put its stale copy back.
  • readR1ButtonMacro throws on a stored action count above the slot capacity instead of returning an empty macro.
  • atkUnpackAtkR1MacroActions refuses a wheel pair stored with two different delays rather than rewriting the press with the release delay.
  • The SetMacroKey frame is 16 bytes, so a step is nine bytes, not ten: atkPackAtkR1MacroStep no longer emits runCount (it has no field) and atkBuildAtkR1MacroKey requires nine bytes. runCount is still validated, and setR1ButtonMacro refuses a loop count other than one instead of silently saving a single pass. ATK_R1_MACRO_MAX_ACTIONS replaces the repeated 70.

Not changed, with reasons

  • GM3 slot vs the device macro index. Documented in setMacro and docs/leobog-gm3.md: the record carries no slot field, so the mouse numbers macros in upload order, and labels plus bindings are built from the same local slot. Making that robust needs a hardware experiment with two uploaded macros (already listed under "Still to pin down"); an in-memory upload counter would be wrong after a reload or after the vendor app uploads one.
  • First whole-table button write. Documented in the field comment and the doc: the copy starts at the factory bindings, so the first write replaces vendor-app bindings and there is nothing to read back against. A confirmation step is a UI decision, so it belongs in the OpenMouse PR rather than here.
  • Staging an R1 macro in an unbound slot. Uploading to a slot no button references and then binding that slot changes which slot the button ends up on, while the panel would still show the caller's slot. That needs a UI decision too, so I left the write in place.
  • The 20 ms floor. Kept (the editor allows any hold time, so rejecting would block fast recordings) but now documented at the clamp and in the decoder, including the read-then-save difference.

Verification: tsc -p tsconfig.json clean; full suite 2825/2825 (five new tests).

Assert the SetMacroKey command byte.

The test checks the frame payload and checksum but not frame[0]. Add this assertion:

Suggested test assertion

   assert.equal(frame.length, 16);

Changing the command byte and recomputing the checksum can leave the existing assertions passing. This is a test-coverage improvement, not an established production defect.

Preserve the DPI stage during polling-rate writes.

If the user presses the DPI button during the 80 ms gap, the polling-rate write sends the stale stage byte back to the mouse. The polling-rate verifier checks only pollingRateHz, so the setter reports success while reverting the user's stage selection.

The decoder accepts a block that violates its documented DPI format.

The format documents offsets 7 and 27 as identical DPI tables, but leobogGm3DecodeOnboard reads only table A and accepts differing values. Status handling can then report table-A values as valid settings. The evidence does not establish which table firmware uses, so it does not prove that the device applies table B or that the displayed DPI is wrong.

Second pass done in 17fe908. One of the two Major findings was a regression I introduced, so thanks for catching it.

Fixed

  • DPI stage editor exposure (Major). My change opened the editor for every isR1() device; on the 0x1085 receiver setDpiStageValue rejects every edit, so the panel offered an edit the connection refuses. The gate is back to usesR1ProMaxUiTransport() || usesR1CompxReceiver(), which is exactly the set setDpiStageCount accepts, and the now-unreachable Math.max(stageCount, 1) fallback is gone.
  • COMPX polling read (Major). decodePollingRate throws on an unknown code, so a stored byte outside the table failed the whole readStatus. The COMPX branch now reports the 1000 Hz ceiling in that case, the same fallback the live-settings path and the docstring already described.
  • productForCidMid now gates on usesSharedR1Transport(), so a device with an R1 product name on an unlisted USB id keeps its R1 identity. (That also removed the near-duplicate helper I had added.)
  • The COMPX system-row write in setPollingRate holds the queue across the whole read-modify-write, like the button and DPI-group paths already do — the row carries the DPI stage pair, so a stage edit could otherwise have put the previous polling code back.
  • setR1ButtonMacro reads the uploaded payload back (count, records and checksum) before pointing the button at the slot, so a dropped chunk can no longer be reported as success. It skips the 31-byte constant header, which is never read back anywhere else and may be normalized on the way in.
  • readR1ButtonMacro reads the slot's trailing checksum byte and requires the 0x55 total, so a flipped action byte is reported instead of handed back to the editor.
  • atkUnpackAtkR1MacroActions refuses a wheel press with no matching release — it would otherwise be saved back with a release the slot never held.
  • atkBuildAtkR1MacroKey rejects step bytes that are not whole numbers in 0-255.
  • The rollback message no longer claims the previous value was restored when its own write failed; it reports restoration as unconfirmed.
  • setDpi resolves the active stage from the block it is about to write, rather than from an earlier read, so a stage the mouse switched to in between cannot be missed. apply()'s message parameter now accepts a thunk for that.
  • readStatus stops after an abandoned link receive instead of stacking the settings read and the battery query behind it.
  • The replayed status rebuilds its UI hints from the cached configuration, so a successful write during backoff no longer shows current values behind a "settings are read-only" note.
  • Docs: the wired battery note now points at the verified wired path, the startup capture no longer reads as if the whole 44 00 reply were undecoded, and the button-table note says OpenMouse writes it (starting from factory bindings) instead of saying it does not manage it.
  • Tests: frame[0] command assertion, and the NearLink test now pins the resolved display name and isR1().

Not changed, with reasons

  • hideSingleDpi has no consumer and defaultButtonMappings may not be consumed — both are verifiable, and both are false positives. The consumers live in the other repository: src/features/devices/cards/DpiCard.tsx reads hideSingleDpi (singleDpiAvailable, and it hides the single-value and custom controls) and AdvancedCards.tsx + device/controller.ts read defaultButtonMappings (canResetDefaults / restoreDefaultButtonMappings). Nothing to change on this side.
  • setR1ButtonMacro accepts any byte as startType. Left as-is: the four modes in ATK_R1_MACRO_START_TYPES are the ones transcribed from ATK HUB, but restricting the field would also reject a mode the vendor firmware supports and we have not captured. The loop count is already refused, which was the case that silently did the wrong thing.
  • The two DPI tables may disagree. Documented rather than enforced: nothing measured says which copy the firmware applies, so rejecting a differing block would turn a cosmetic mismatch into a device that reads as unsupported. leobogGm3DpiTablesAgree is the checker for callers that care.
  • The whole-block write window. The 80 ms settle gap is a measured cable requirement, so a stage change made with the mouse's own button inside it is still replaced by the copy the write started from. That is now written down in apply(); narrowing it needs a command that writes a single field.

I also added docstrings to the helpers this branch introduces and to the constants/functions it touches, which is what the pre-merge docstring check was asking for.

Verification: tsc -p tsconfig.json clean; full suite 2825/2825; OpenMouse still type-checks against the updated package.

Fixed in a37cb4f — good catch, my first attempt only rejected a table that ended on a press.

atkUnpackAtkR1MacroActions now requires the very next record after a wheel press to be its own release, and rejects everything else while a press is pending: a second press, a keyboard action, a vendor record, or the end of the table. The wheelPressPending = false reset in the keyboard branch is gone because that path is now unreachable while a press is pending.

Three cases are pinned in the test: press → keyboard action, press → press, and press at the end of the table.

tsc clean, full suite 2825/2825.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Reject a wheel release that has no open press.

601-601: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject a wheel release that has no open press.

The wheel-release branch checks only the previous step kind and its delay. It does not check wheelPressPending. A second release with the same delay decodes without error and produces no step. A read-then-save then writes the slot without that record.

Suggested fix
-        if (previous?.kind !== "wheel-up" && previous?.kind !== "wheel-down") {
+        if (!wheelPressPending || (previous?.kind !== "wheel-up" && previous?.kind !== "wheel-down")) {

Update the wheel-release validation to reject a release when wheelPressPending
is false, while retaining the existing previous-step kind check; only accept a
release when there is an open wheel press and the prior step is a wheel-up or
wheel-down.
Minor follow-up Hold the queue across the COMPX stage-count read and write.

782-785: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Heavy lift

Hold the queue across the COMPX stage-count read and write.

On the COMPX receiver, setDpiStageCount reads the 10-byte system row and writes it back as two separate queued operations. A setPollingRate call that runs between them is reverted by the stale whole-row write, and setDpiStageCount still resolves successfully. Run the COMPX read, modify, write, and confirm steps inside one this.run(...) call, using readUnqueued and writeUnqueued. Keep the ProMax branch on its existing helper, because writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystem takes the queue itself and would deadlock if nested.

Suggested direction

Wrap the COMPX branch of setDpiStageCount in this.run(async () => { ... }), read with readUnqueued, and write with writeUnqueued. Leave the ProMax branch and its confirmation read unchanged.

Minor follow-up Hold the macro upload and the button bind in one queue turn.

560-564: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff

Hold the macro upload and the button bind in one queue turn.

The chunk writes, the payload readbacks, and the record bind each take the queue separately. A second upload to the same macroId can write its chunks after the final readback passes and before the bind. The bind then points the button at slot contents this call did not submit, and the call still returns success.

Run the upload, the payload readback, and the bind inside one this.run(...) call. Use the unqueued helpers in that task. writeR1ButtonRecord takes the queue itself, so calling it from inside the task would wait on the queue the task already holds. Split it into a queued wrapper and an unqueued core, and call the core from the macro path.

The persistent-write guard in write() runs before its queue turn and does not run in the macro path's entry checks. Call the same guard before run(...) starts.

Narrow the setDpi doc: a stage switch during the write gap is not preserved.

The doc says a stage the mouse switches to "in between cannot be missed." That holds only for the two-read interval this change removes. setDpi takes its stage from the block that apply reads before the 80 ms write gap. A stage the mouse selects during that gap is overwritten by the full-block write. The readback checks only the written stage, so the call returns success while the mouse's selection has moved back.

Nitpick Pin the SetMacroKey command byte to its literal value.

409-409: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Pin the SetMacroKey command byte to its literal value.

The assertion compares frame[0] with ATK_COMPX_COMMAND.setMacroKey. The builder writes that same constant into payload[0]. If the constant changes, the builder and the assertion change together, so this test still passes while the device receives a different command byte. The neighboring COMPX assertions compare command bytes with literal values. This assertion does not.

Suggested fix
-  assert.equal(frame[0], ATK_COMPX_COMMAND.setMacroKey);

Third round in 47f371d. All five are fixed.

  • Sparse step arrays. atkBuildAtkR1MacroKey now validates and copies in one index loop; every skipped holes, so new Array(9) passed the check and copied undefined in as zero. Pinned with a sparse-array test.
  • Macro slot readback was split across queue slots. The upload and the confirming readback now share one run, so nothing can interleave between a chunk and the chunk that checks it.
  • Cached status survived a failed button readback. writeR1ButtonRecord clears lastStatus before throwing, so the next read cannot serve the old mapping from memory.
  • Duplicate wheel release. The release branch now requires an open press, not just a preceding wheel step with a matching delay — a second release used to decode into no step at all, and a save would drop the record.
  • Replayed status forced linked/refreshFailed. A replay now rebuilds its notice with the link state and refresh result of the last full poll, recorded in lastStatusFlags, so a sleeping mouse keeps its note and a failed refresh does not read as a clean one.

tsc clean, full suite 2825/2825.

Add a partially sparse step case to the frame-builder test.

The new assertion at src/drivers/atk/protocol.test.ts:437-438 passes a fully sparse array. Any validator fails that input at index 0, including a first-entry check combined with every. The test cannot detect a regression that accepts a hole at a later position, such as index eight, and substitutes zero for it. The current atkBuildAtkR1MacroKey loop is indexed and rejects that case, so shipped behavior is correct. Add an assertion with a populated prefix and a hole at index eight.

Test gap: the wheel-sequence tests use canonical 0x06 releases only. A decoder that treats 0x0e as the same release passes these tests.

The protocol tests pass without detecting that the decoder loses the original status on a decode/save round trip.

This can occur when: A regression accepts a wheel release with an unsupported additional status bit.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The binding uses options.startType after only checking that it is a byte. A value outside the defined ATK_R1_MACRO_START_TYPES modes may be persisted as a macro binding that the device cannot execute as requested.

The method can report success while the button has an unsupported macro start mode.

This can occur when: A direct caller passes an undefined mode such as startType: 5 with otherwise valid steps.

Unverified finding

isWheelRelease masks the status to its low three bits, so a pending wheel press followed by status 0x0e and zero value fields is accepted as an ordinary 0x06 release. If the extra bit is meaningful or unsupported, decoding and saving silently drops it.

An editor can present the pair as an ordinary wheel step and replace the original record with a different one on save.

This can occur when: A stored, checksum-valid wheel pair has a release status of 0x0e rather than 0x06, with matching delays.

561-565: Minor · Potential issue · Poor tradeoff

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Readback deliberately skips the first 31 bytes of the uploaded table. If a header chunk is dropped while the payload persists, verification succeeds and the button can be bound to a slot with an invalid or stale header.

The binding reports success although the device may not execute the intended macro.

This can occur when: The receiver retains an old first header chunk but accepts all payload chunks.

One more in 2e04944, found by re-reading my own diff rather than by a review.

setDpiStageCount reads the 10-byte system row, rewrites the count and active-stage pairs, writes the row back and re-reads it as three separately queued operations — the same shape as the button-row and polling-row findings above. That row also holds the polling code, and on the 0xf58e receiver the DPI pair, so an edit that read the row in between could put the previous stage count back. My change made this path reachable on the receiver by adding usesR1CompxReceiver() to its gate, so the receiver branch now runs the whole read-modify-write-verify inside one run task.

The verified Pro Max receiver branch still calls writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystem, which owns its own exchange and is shared with two other callers, so I left it as it is rather than half-converting it. setActiveDpiStage needs nothing: its non-receiver path writes the two-byte active-stage pair directly, with no read-modify-write to lose.

While I was there I also ran the protocol CI steps locally, since the workflow has not been approved to run yet: npm run build, npm pack --dry-run, npm audit --omit=dev --audit-level=high (0 vulnerabilities) and npm test all pass; OpenMouse's npm run check, npm run size and npm audit --audit-level=high pass too (one moderate vite advisory, below the CI threshold and already on main).

Major follow-up Serialize the Pro Max receiver row edits in setDpiStageCount and setPollingRate.

911-914: Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Serialize the Pro Max receiver row edits in setDpiStageCount and setPollingRate.

On the Pro Max receiver path, both methods read the whole 10-byte system row, change one pair, and write the whole row back. Each read and write takes the queue separately, so another queued edit can run between a read and its write. The later write then restores the stale stage pair or polling code, and the device keeps that value. This sequence predates this PR. The PR does not change these branches.

The 0xf58e branches already hold the queue for the full read-modify-write-verify sequence. Apply the same pattern to the usesVerifiedR1ProMaxReceiverTransport() branches, using readUnqueued inside one queued run().

Suggested fix
     if (this.usesVerifiedR1ProMaxReceiverTransport()) {
-      const built = buildRow(await this.read(REGISTER.system, 10));
-      active = built.active;
-      await this.writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystem(built.row);
-      confirmedSystem = await this.read(REGISTER.system, 10);
+      const result = await this.run(async () => {
+        const built = buildRow(await this.readUnqueued(REGISTER.system, 10));
+        await this.writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystemUnqueued(built.row);
+        return { active: built.active, confirmed: await this.readUnqueued(REGISTER.system, 10) };
+      });
+      active = result.active;
+      confirmedSystem = result.confirmed;
     } else {

Add writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystemUnqueued. It uses the same length check, the same usesVerifiedR1ProMaxReceiverTransport() check, and the same echo matcher as writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystem. It must call exchangeUnqueued instead of exchange, and it must not call identify(). identify() sends through exchange, which queues behind the held task. If identification is still pending, that call waits on the task that is waiting for it. Call identify() before the queue is taken, as setDpiStageCount does at its start. Apply the same change to the setPollingRate Pro Max branch.

Add a failed-readback test for macro slot restoration.

The only test that calls setR1ButtonMacro takes the success path. Its readback matches the uploaded payload, so the mismatch branch and its writeAll(before) restore never run. Removing that restore would not fail any test. Add a case where one readback byte differs. Assert that the call rejects and that the captured slot bytes are written back.

Reuse the replies from the success test. Replace the readback reply at 0x061f with bytes that differ from the uploaded payload. Assert the rejection. Check the restore writes from 0x0600 through 0x061e.

Both fixed in d9e70ff.

  • macroId defaulted to 0. A second button's upload silently replaced the first button's macro and could overwrite a vendor macro. setR1ButtonMacro now requires an explicit slot, in the type as well as at runtime. OpenMouse already passed one; its wrapper's options type is updated in that repository (openmouse a59e911).
  • A failed upload left the slot half written. The slot may already be what a button plays, and the chunk loop wrote over it with no way back. The upload now captures everything it is about to overwrite, and the readback failure path writes that back before throwing. The message says the restore is best-effort rather than promising it, matching the button-record rollback.

The macro test now feeds the four capture reads that precede the upload.

tsc clean in both repositories, protocol suite 2825/2825, OpenMouse suite 629/629.

@Akinome Thanks for the update. I inspected f4c0f0d. The readback-mismatch path now uses the guarded restore helper. The new regression test checks that a concurrent row change causes no rollback write and clears the status cache.

I’ll trigger an incremental review focused on this change. I did not run npm run check in this environment.

- leobog: keep an enabled stage that holds the 100 DPI floor, reject
  negative macro step counts, size macro names in UTF-16 code units, try
  both report-ID alignments, cancel the receive deadline timer, report
  write failures as failures, reorder the asleep note, reopen the handle
  after a failed write read, and refresh replayed settings from the cache
- atk: resolve R1 identity from the USB ids so an A9 NearLink mouse that
  shares a CID/MID pair keeps its own sensor, honour the full stage count
  on the 0xf58e receiver, cap its polling read at 1000 Hz, gate its
  polling write on the advertised rates, hold the queue across the button
  and DPI read-modify-write sequences, refuse a stored action count above
  the slot capacity, and reject wheel pairs and repeat counts the frame
  cannot carry

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- atk: expose the DPI stage editor only where the writes are accepted, so
  the R1 paths that reject a stage edit no longer offer one
- atk: fall back to the 1000 Hz ceiling when the COMPX system row holds a
  code the table does not know, instead of failing the whole status read
- atk: hold the queue across the COMPX system-row read-modify-write, read
  the uploaded macro payload back before binding the button to it, and
  verify the slot checksum before decoding stored steps
- atk: refuse an unpaired wheel press and non-byte step bytes, and report
  a rollback that could not be confirmed as unconfirmed
- atk: resolve the CID/MID entry through usesSharedR1Transport so a device
  with an R1 product name keeps its R1 identity
- leobog: resolve the plain DPI write's stage from the block it writes, stop
  a poll after an abandoned receive, and refresh the UI hints with the
  replayed settings; document the whole-block write window
- docs: correct the wired battery, startup capture and button-table notes
- tests: pin the SetMacroKey command byte and the NearLink identity

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pending-press flag only rejected a table that ended on a press, so a
second press, a keyboard action or any other record in between was still
decoded as one editable wheel step with a release the slot never held.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- atk: validate the step bytes by index, so a sparse array cannot pass
  `every` and copy undefined in as zero
- atk: upload and read back the macro slot inside one queued task, and drop
  the cached status when a button write's readback fails
- atk: require an open press before accepting a wheel release, so a
  duplicated release cannot vanish on the next save
- leobog: rebuild a replayed status with the last full poll's link state and
  refresh result instead of forcing them to linked-and-refreshed

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two findings from the latest review:

- `macroId` defaulted to 0, so a second button's upload replaced the first
  button's macro and could overwrite a vendor macro. It is now required.
- The chunk loop wrote the slot in place with no way back, so a dropped
  chunk left a button that already pointed at the slot playing a partial
  macro. What the upload overwrites is captured first and written back when
  the readback disagrees.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- atk: read the stored macro slot inside one queued task, so an upload into
  the same slot cannot mix two macros between the count, the records and the
  checksum
- atk: compare the whole eight-byte button row on readback, so a changed
  neighbouring record also triggers the rollback, and drop the cached status
  when that read rejects
- leobog: clear the replayed status notes a verified write invalidates — an
  awake mouse is no longer reported asleep and a failed refresh no longer
  sticks

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The stage count lives in the same system row as the polling code, and on
the 0xf58e receiver the DPI pair as well. The row was read, rewritten and
verified as three separately queued operations, so an edit that read the
row in between could put the previous stage count back. The receiver path
now runs the whole read-modify-write-verify inside one task. The Pro Max
receiver branch keeps its own write helper, which owns its exchange.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`setPollingRate`, `setDpiStageCount` and `setActiveDpiStage` each read the
whole 10-byte system row on the F58A receiver, change one pair and write the
row back as separately queued operations, so a DPI or polling edit that read
the row in between could have its change restored away. All three now run
their read, edit, write and confirming read inside one task.

`writeR1ProMaxReceiverSystem` lost its queue-taking wrapper because every
caller is now inside a task; the remaining helper sends through
`exchangeUnqueued` and does not identify, which would queue behind the task
it is running in. Each caller identifies first.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The vendor's own reset leaves a zero action count behind, so a slot can be
cleared through the write path already in use: `atkPackAtkR1MacroTable`
accepts no steps, and `clearR1ButtonMacro` writes that table without touching
any button binding.

The slot's upload/readback/rollback moved into one private helper so the
clear and a normal save share it.

The unreadable-action error now names the five raw bytes of the record it
could not decode, so a format that is not in the editor yet can be captured
from a device that stores one — the ATK mouse-button action is the next one.

`docs/atk-testing.md` still lists macro clearing as unavailable; that line
belongs to the firmware-update section and is about the four-chunk vendor
reset, which this does not implement.

Rebased onto main, retaining both sides' driver registrations. Scoped R1 identity overrides to USB IDs, guarded the first GM3 button-table overwrite with explicit consent, rejected macro uploads without verified slot addressing, and rejected inconsistent DPI tables. Added regression coverage for ATK CORE26K identity/DPI, macro slots, config alignment, timer cleanup and timeout recovery.

Deferred the polling-write/DPI-button race: hardware requires an 80 ms gap after the final config read, so rereading cannot make the full-block write atomic; no single-field command or lock is verified. Left the low-value ATK delay note unchanged.

Validation: build passed; 3,007 tests passed, zero skips; ATK checks 132/132 and focused GM3 checks 5/5 passed. No lint script is defined. GitHub reports MERGEABLE.

A stale report-ID-prefixed battery reply can pass responseMatchesCommand() and be written back as a bogus configuration block, so setPollingRate() can overwrite the mouse's onboard settings instead of changing only the polling rate. Decode and reject before before calling transform() or writeOnboard().
