makefile pretty print

Thanks for the PR, just letting you know it's on my radar.

This is good, but encountered a couple of things:

• Would love if there was a Makefile variable VERBOSE=1 (or something) that disabled this.
• msgfmt commands print some output, which somewhat unintuitively comes before command itself is printed. Maybe the command should be printed before the execution.
