WinDeckOS 2.0 - OLED Update
WinDeckOS 2.0 - OLED Update
Don't let the name throw you off- there are LCD changes included as well for general quality of life.
Video tutorial available here (Same process on OLED and LCD)
Here are the patch notes in no specific order:
- Updated Steam Deck LCD drivers. WinDeckOS does not automatically update these drivers so ensure you update them as needed manually.
- Updated both Steam and Windows 11 versions so less updates are required for first time users.
- Added support for Steam Deck OLED. This is done by me manually installing the drivers from valve's resources page. WindeckOS now works for both Steam Deck variants.
- Re-organized desktop icons to make more sense.
- Downloads moved to GoFile, Pixeldrain, and Qiwi (should hopefully avoid any file downloading limitations of Drive and Mega)
- Changed taskbar behavior to automatically hide as it makes more sense in a gaming mode setting
- Renamed the OS Drive name from a random assortment of letters too "WinDeckOS". Also added a custom icon to the drive.
- Changed the autorun.inf file to allow users to change the drive name to anything they want.
- Docked audio is now fixed upon connecting power to the system. This means you no longer need to manually use the shortcut and as such the shortcut has been removed.
- The docked audio fix no longer has a brief cmd popup. This caused issues with games running in fullscreen mode and is now fixed.
- Removed Windows Copilot introduced in later Windows updates.
- Further de-bloated by uninstalling apps automatically downloaded from later Windows versions.
- Updated Xbox app and Xbox game bar and switched game bar to compact mode. Xbox game bar is disabled but Windows updates sometimes bring it back so compact mode will be useful in case that happens
- Steam no longer runs as an admin. This is because it caused a performance issue with the big picture mode UI. Unfortunately that means admin apps will have issues with the steam controller.
!!NOTICE!!
Due to installation of newer Windows versions this install is 40+GB. If you are still using a 64GB Steam Deck then I'd recommend you use WinDeckOS 1.1 as it is much smaller. Due to the major improvements I would recommend installing this version if you have a 256GB Steam Deck and above.

Full List of changes this OS makes
-
I've uninstalled pretty much all bloat just by doing it through standard windows uninstall app process
-
Installed steam and chrome
-
Runs on windows to go
-
Disabled the Xbox Game Bar
-
No scripts, but here's the resource I used to make some of the changes to the OS
https://baldsealion.com/Windows-OS-Tweaks.html
(Installed DirectX, C++, disabled edge background running, disabled hibernation, enabled the osk when no keyboard is attached, and disabled the UAC prompts) -
It has valve's official drivers pre-installed, except for the WiFi driver as I've opted to use this one that doesn't have random cut outs:

Touch responsiveness is better thanks to a registry key
https://pureinfotech.com/make-surface-more-touch-responsive-registry-tweak/
(this works on deck as well as basically any windows touch screen) -
The custom icons for the profile picture, gaming mode shortcut, and wallpaper are all stored in a folder titled "Steamdeck32" on the root of the C drive. This is also where the cmd prompt to fix the dock audio is located, right next to the bat file that can easily be viewed.
-
Steam's gamepadui menu boots at launch in administrator mode using window's startup apps folder. (This is how I get the controls to still work in administrator apps such as Task Manager)
-
There are no performance improvements over regular windows. It runs the same, you just don't need to download any drivers or do any form extra work to get the best performance possible on windows.
-
The benefits of a pre-rolled image is ease of use. Download and deploy the image and you won't have to worry about setting up all of the windows things to get the deck working properly. You also aren't missing out on the SteamOS experience and you don't have to figure out how to set it up yourself, it's just done for you once you get the OS installed.
-
Project isn't open source because this is a Windows image and I don't think such a thing is possible, but I do heavily encourage anyone who's skeptical to feel free to look through everything, there's nothing malicious here.
WinDeckOS 1.1 [First Public Release]
- Fixed the "Enter Gaming Mode Shortcut" not working when steam is running (changed to a shortcut that runs "steam://open/bigpicture")
- Changed the name of the gaming mode startup shortcut in "shell:startup" to more accurately describe its properties. (Used to be titled, "Enter Gaming Mode" now titled "Start in Gaming Mode")
