# Chisel Support Implementation Summary

## What Was Implemented

Complete end-to-end support for Chisel/Scala processor projects in the Processor CI configuration generator.

## Files Created/Modified

### New Files Created

1. **`core/chisel_manager.py`** (463 lines)
- Core module handling all Chisel-specific operations
- Functions for parsing Scala files, extracting modules, building dependency graphs
- Verilog generation via SBT integration
- Complete end-to-end project processing

2. **`chisel_runner.py`** (200 lines)
- Optional standalone CLI tool for direct Chisel project processing
- Useful for testing and debugging Chisel projects independently

3. **`test_chisel.py`** (221 lines)
- Comprehensive test suite
- Creates minimal test project and verifies all functionality
- Tests: file discovery, module extraction, dependency graph, top module identification

4. **`CHISEL_SUPPORT.md`**
- Complete documentation of Chisel support
- Usage examples, requirements, implementation details

### Modified Files

1. **`config_generator.py`**
- Added imports for chisel_manager functions
- Added `.scala` to supported extensions
- Modified `find_and_log_files()` to detect Scala files first
- Added Chisel processing branch in `generate_processor_config()`
- Updated docstring with Chisel support information

## Core Functionality

### 1. Parse Scala Files → Find all `class X extends Module`

```python
def extract_chisel_modules(scala_files: List[str]) -> List[Tuple[str, str]]:
"""
Extracts Chisel Module definitions from Scala files.
Matches: class X extends Module, class X extends RawModule, object X extends Module
"""
```

Example patterns matched:
```scala
class SimpleCPU extends Module { ... }
class ALU(width: Int) extends Module { ... }
object TopLevel extends Module { ... }
```

### 2. Build Dependency Graph from `Module(new Y)`

```python
def build_chisel_dependency_graph(modules) -> Tuple[Dict, Dict]:
"""
Builds dependency graph by analyzing Module instantiations.
Returns: (module_graph, module_graph_inverse)
"""
```

Detects instantiation patterns:
```scala
val alu = Module(new ALU)
val alu = Module(new ALU())
val alu = Module(new ALU(32))
```

### 3. Identify Top-Level Module (Not Instantiated by Any Other)

```python
def find_top_module(module_graph, module_graph_inverse, modules, repo_name) -> str:
"""
Identifies top-level module using:
- Zero parents (not instantiated by others)
- Heuristics: "top" in name, matches repo name
- Number of instantiated modules (complexity)
"""
```

Scoring system prefers:
- Modules not instantiated by others
- Modules with "top" in name (+1000)
- Modules matching repository name (+500)
- Modules instantiating more components (+10 per instantiation)
- Excludes test/bench modules (-10000)

### 4. Find or Generate Main App Calling Top Module

```python
def generate_main_app(directory, top_module, package_name="generated") -> str:
"""
Finds existing or generates new main App object.
Creates: src/main/scala/generated/GenerateVerilog.scala
"""
```

Generated App structure:
```scala
package generated
import chisel3._
import chisel3.stage.{ChiselStage, ChiselGeneratorAnnotation}
object GenerateVerilog extends App {
(new ChiselStage).execute(
Array("--target-dir", "generated"),
Seq(ChiselGeneratorAnnotation(() => new TopModule()))
)
}
```

### 5. Write or Modify build.sbt

```python
def configure_build_sbt(directory, top_module=None) -> str:
"""
Ensures build.sbt exists with proper Chisel dependencies.
Creates minimal build.sbt if missing.
"""
```

Generated build.sbt includes:
- Scala 2.13.10
- Chisel3 3.6.0
- ChiselTest 0.6.0
- Proper scalac options

### 6. Run SBT to Emit Verilog

```python
def emit_verilog(directory, main_app, timeout=300) -> Tuple[bool, str, str]:
"""
Executes: sbt runMain <MainClass>
Returns: (success, verilog_file_path, log_output)
"""
```

Process:
1. Extracts main class name from App file
2. Runs `sbt runMain package.MainClass`
3. Locates generated Verilog in `generated/` directory
4. Returns success status and file path

## Integration with Config Generator

The main `config_generator.py` now:

1. **Auto-detects Chisel projects** by checking for `.scala` files
2. **Switches to Chisel mode** automatically
3. **Processes end-to-end**:
- Finds Scala files
- Extracts modules
- Builds dependency graph
- Identifies top module
- Generates/finds main App
- Configures build.sbt
- Runs SBT to generate Verilog
4. **Saves configuration** in same format as HDL projects
5. **Handles cleanup** of cloned repositories

## Usage Examples

### Process Remote Chisel Repository
```bash
python config_generator.py -u https://github.com/user/chisel-cpu -p config/
```

### Process Local Chisel Project
```bash
python config_generator.py \
-u https://github.com/user/chisel-cpu \
-l /path/to/local/project \
-p config/
```

### Optional: Direct Processing with chisel_runner.py
```bash
python chisel_runner.py -d /path/to/chisel/project -o config/
python chisel_runner.py -d /path/to/chisel/project --list-modules
python chisel_runner.py -d /path/to/chisel/project --skip-verilog
```

## Test Results

All tests pass successfully:
```
[TEST 1] Finding Scala files... [PASS]
[TEST 2] Extracting Chisel modules... [PASS]
[TEST 3] Building dependency graph... [PASS]
[TEST 4] Finding top module... [PASS]
[SUCCESS] All tests passed!
```
