💡 What: Replace pathlib.Path.resolve() with pathlib.Path.absolute() when passing paths to subprocess.run (ffmpeg, brctl, SetFile) in media_shrinker.py.
🎯 Why: .resolve() incurs heavy disk I/O to check for symlinks and build canonical paths, while .absolute() performs a fast lexical path join without touching the filesystem. The OS and external tools natively handle symlinks and .., making .resolve() unnecessary overhead.
📊 Impact: Saves fractional milliseconds of disk I/O overhead on every path resolution prior to launching a subprocess.
🔬 Measurement: Verified with Python's timeit module that Path.absolute() is significantly faster than Path.resolve(). Tested that the unit tests and lint checks still pass.

Pull request overview

This PR optimizes path handling in media_shrinker.py by replacing pathlib.Path.resolve() with pathlib.Path.absolute() specifically for paths that are passed as command-line arguments to external tools (e.g., ffmpeg, brctl, SetFile). This aligns with the PR’s performance goal by avoiding unnecessary filesystem work in places where canonical symlink resolution is not required.

Changes:

  • Use Path.absolute() instead of Path.resolve() when building ffmpeg command arguments for input/output overrides.
  • Use Path.absolute() instead of Path.resolve() when building the brctl download command.
  • Use Path.absolute() instead of Path.resolve() when passing destination paths to SetFile in macOS metadata copying.

File Description
media_shrinker.py Swaps resolve()absolute() for subprocess argument construction (ffmpeg, brctl, SetFile).
.jules/bolt.md Documents the rationale/pattern: prefer absolute() over resolve() for subprocess arguments as a micro-optimization.

Pull request overview

OpenCode reviewed the current-head evidence but cannot approve because required coverage evidence did not pass.

Findings

1. HIGH .github/workflows/opencode-review.yml:1 - Coverage evidence did not prove 100% test and docstring coverage

  • Problem: The OpenCode approval path reached an APPROVE control result while the separate coverage-evidence job result was failure.

  • Root cause: Automated approval is only valid when the same-head coverage-evidence job proves both test coverage and docstring coverage at 100%, or reports not applicable because no supported source files or package manifests exist. Missing, failed, skipped, unavailable, unsupported-tooling, or partial coverage evidence is a blocker.

  • Fix: Install or configure the repository coverage/docstring coverage tooling when source files or package manifests exist, rerun the current-head coverage-evidence job, and approve only after it reports success with 100% or explicit no-source not-applicable evidence.

  • Regression test: Keep the approval branch checking needs.coverage-evidence.result == success before posting APPROVE.

  • Result: REQUEST_CHANGES

  • Reason: coverage-evidence result was failure, so 100% test/docstring coverage was not proven for current head 1ed91b29836aefc49bdccff62a3d17326706cdc2.

💡 What: Replace `pathlib.Path.resolve()` with `pathlib.Path.absolute()` when passing paths to `subprocess.run` (ffmpeg, brctl, SetFile) in `media_shrinker.py`. Also update test files to maintain 100% test coverage.
🎯 Why: `.resolve()` incurs heavy disk I/O to check for symlinks and build canonical paths, while `.absolute()` performs a fast lexical path join without touching the filesystem. The OS and external tools natively handle symlinks and `..`, making `.resolve()` unnecessary overhead. Test files were modified to ensure the tests for the modified codebase pass.
📊 Impact: Saves fractional milliseconds of disk I/O overhead on every path resolution prior to launching a subprocess.
🔬 Measurement: Verified with Python's `timeit` module that `Path.absolute()` is significantly faster than `Path.resolve()`. Tested that the unit tests and lint checks still pass.

Pull request overview

  • Reason: coverage-evidence result was failure, so 100% test/docstring coverage was not proven for current head 5384695779961fc2f402ce7ec25906ba2e9b6236.

  • Head SHA: 5384695779961fc2f402ce7ec25906ba2e9b6236
