Recipes are now balanced on the following principle:
Solids = 1
10 Fluids = 1
Balanced left and right using the above

-Alternative options
Balance Sodium, Carbon, Hydrogen and oxygen in each reaction
Balance just the sodium

This is the current situation that this PR is aiming to resolve. Water can be created out of nothing.

I've planned out the uses of Sodium that I can think of. So we can compare the impact of the proposed changes on these recipe chains.

  • Paper / Pulp 2
  • Paper / Pulp 3
  • Sodium gold cyanide
  • Sodium silver cyanide
  • Silver zinc battery
  • Silver zinc battery - molten salt
  • Rocket booster 2
  • Rocket booster 2 - molten salt
  • Rocket fuel
  • Rocket fuel - puffer hydrazine
  • Chrome oxide

Paper / Pulp 2

The Sodium hypochlorite is recycled back to Sodium hydroxide, forming a closed loop.
The brown liquor is cleaned, using a closed loop of Sodium hydroxide > Sodium sulfate > Sodium > Sodium hydroxide.

image image image

Paper / Pulp 3

The Paper 3 Sodium carbonate is recycled back to Sodium hydroxide, forming a closed loop.
A small amount of Sodium hydroxide is consumed by Pulp 3.

image image

Sodium gold cyanide

Sodium hydroxide forms a closed loop.

image

Sodium silver cyanide

Two thirds of the Sodium hydroxide is looped back.
image

Silver zinc battery

The simple chain. Saline water electrolysis is used for all the Sodium hydroxide.

image

Silver zinc battery - molten salt

A slightly more complex recipe chain for higher efficiency. Fewer machines and power used. However this chain doesn't have the hydrogen by product which may be desirable.

image

Rocket booster 2

The Salt by product of Ammonium perchlorate is recycled into Hydrochloric acid and Sodium hydroxide, the sulfur forming a closed loop.
Saline water electrolysis is used for all the remaining Sodium hydroxide.

image image

Rocket booster 2 - molten salt

The Salt by product of Ammonium perchlorate is recycled into Hydrochloric acid and Sodium hydroxide, the sulfur forming a closed loop.
Saline water electrolysis is used to meet the hydrogen demand. The remaining Sodium hydroxide is produced via Molten salt electrolysis.

image image

Rocket fuel

Saline water electrolysis is used to meet the hydrogen demand. The remaining Sodium hydroxide is produced via Molten salt electrolysis.

image

Rocket fuel - puffer hydrazine

Puffers are used to produce Hydrazine so far less electrolysis is required. Saline water electrolysis is used to meet the hydrogen demand. This produces an excess of Sodium hydroxide which is turned to a solution and voided.

image

Chrome oxide

The sulfur here forms a closed loop.

Recycling the Sodium hypochlorite returns 80% of the Sodium hydroxide.
Cleaning the brown liquor consumes half the Sodium hydroxide.

image image image

Paper / Pulp 3

The Paper 3 Sodium carbonate is recycled back to Sodium hydroxide, forming a closed loop.
A small amount of Sodium hydroxide is consumed by Pulp 3.

The Paper 3 Sodium carbonate is recycled back to Sodium hydroxide, producing excess Sodium hydroxide.
The small amount of Sodium hydroxide consumed by Pulp 3 is reduced by a third.

image image

Sodium gold cyanide

Sodium hydroxide forms a closed loop.

Excess Sodium hydroxide is now produced.

image

Sodium silver cyanide

Two thirds of the Sodium hydroxide is looped back.

80% of the Sodium hydroxide is looped back.

image

Silver zinc battery

The simple chain. Saline water electrolysis is used for all the Sodium hydroxide.

No change.

Silver zinc battery - molten salt

A slightly more complex recipe chain for higher efficiency. Fewer machines and power used. However this chain doesn't have the hydrogen by product which may be desirable.

Fewer machines are required. Not a lot changes.

image

Rocket booster 2

The Salt by product of Ammonium perchlorate is recycled into Hydrochloric acid and Sodium hydroxide, the sulfur forming a closed loop.
Saline water electrolysis is used for all the remaining Sodium hydroxide.

Twice as much Sodium hydroxide is produced from recycling the Salt.
Saline water electrolysis for the remaining hydrogen produces an excess of Sodium hydroxide.

Because recycling the salt produces so much more Sodium hydroxide, there is no remaining Sodium hydroxide demand. Chlorine is the driving ingredient producing an excess of Sodium hydroxide.

Rocket fuel

Saline water electrolysis is used to meet the hydrogen demand. The remaining Sodium hydroxide is produced via Molten salt electrolysis.

Half as much Molten salt electrolysis is required. Nothing else really changes.

image

Rocket fuel - puffer hydrazine

Puffers are used to produce Hydrazine so far less electrolysis is required. Saline water electrolysis is used to meet the hydrogen demand. This produces an excess of Sodium hydroxide which is turned to a solution and voided.

More than twice as much Molten salt electrolysis is required.

image

Chrome oxide

The sulfur here forms a closed loop.

This recipe chain now produces Sodium out of nothing.

My conclusions after spending some time with this PR:

  1. If we proceeded with this, there are multiple additional recipes that would also need adjusting.
  2. It breaks a lot of existing builds.
  3. Many round numbers are changed to partial amounts.

From a gameplay perspective, there was no real issue. A couple of recipes were just a bit strange from a realism perspective. I don't think this is enough of a reason to break everyone's factories. If we make any change, I think we should aim for it to be as non-intrusive as possible.

For all these reasons, I don't like the changes as currently implemented in this PR.
