## 2024-06-25 - Optimize yEnc decoding

**Learning:** Iterating over byte strings manually in Python is significantly slower than using built-in C-backed methods. yEnc decoding can be optimized heavily by utilizing a module-level `_YENC_TRANS_TABLE` with `bytes.translate()`, and handling escapes with `bytes.find()` instead of checking byte by byte, netting an approximate ~7-8x speedup. Furthermore, algebraic simplification allows `(char - 64 - 42) % 256` to be replaced with `(char - 106) % 256`.

**Action:** Whenever processing or decoding large volumes of bytes, always prioritize built-in C-backed functions like `translate` and `find`. Precompute translation tables as module constants to save time, and apply algebraic reductions to simplify per-byte modifications. Always make sure to consider lines without escapes for a fast path.
