Editing other text elements (other than editablecontent or textarea)

Not all editable text elements in on-line systems are textarea tags or have the editablecontent attribute set.

For example, Atlassian Confluence and JIRA.

We don't want to display the zed icon everywhere of course, but is there another way? For example, right click -> edit in zed?

I don't really know how to do this since I've never implemented a chrome app, but I'm happy to have a go and give you a pull request. Would take me at least a few weeks to get to it though.

Making anything editable may be difficult from a practical perspective because "content" is represented differently depending on the HTML element. E.g. in a textarea/content editable it's the innerHTML, in an input it's the .value. What if there's rich content? I just looked at Confluence's editor and it uses rich text. Do you want to edit that as HTML? As plain text?

I've just looked closer at our particular need, which is to edit Gherkin syntax from a plugin to JIRA. It is plain text in a textarea, but the textarea element is inside an iframe.

Any ideas?

There is a chrome/sublime text add-on called ghost text that negates this problem. To edit any text field, you simply click on the toolbar icon and then the text field to edit. If it is a rich text field than, you edit it in HTML.

Thanks for the tip. I've installed ghost text both the extension for chrome and the plugin for sublime text and was able to connect them and open the Behave.PRO text area in sublime text for editing but unfortunately nothing that I type in gets written back within the text area in Behave.PRO. Any idea how to deal with that? Thanks in advance..

@xray5483 dunno what to do except make sure that everything is configured correctly and the port you are trying to use is not already in use and maybe adding an issue on that Github page...
Are other text areas working?
