we should choose under which license we redistribute openriver.

What do you think about GPLv3?

It depends whether you want to permit non-viral integration in 3rd-party programs or not.

If you want to, GPL is unsuitable (it's defined as a "viral license"). Something like BSD-2 or MIT might be more suitable.
