  • End-to-end business workflows
  • Database integration with all components
  • CLI integration with database operations
  • File I/O operations
  • Export/import workflows

3. Performance Tests (Missing)

  • Large dataset performance (1000+ employees)
  • Query optimization validation
  • Memory usage profiling

4. Security Tests (Missing)

  • SQL injection prevention
  • Input validation security
  • File access security
  • Path traversal prevention

5. Error Handling Tests (Missing)

  • Database connection failures
  • File system errors
  • Network operation failures
  • Edge case handling

Impact

  • CRITICAL: Database migrations untested - high risk of data loss
  • CRITICAL: No tests verify application can start
  • HIGH: Business logic untested - bugs in production
  • HIGH: CLI commands untested - user-facing issues
  • HIGH: Security validation untested - vulnerabilities
  • MEDIUM: No regression prevention
  • MEDIUM: Refactoring is extremely risky

Root Cause

  1. Tests were not prioritized during initial development
  2. Focus was on features over testing infrastructure
  3. Coverage threshold set too low (8%)
  4. UI tests excluded from coverage calculation

Proposed Solution

Phase 1: Critical Path Tests (Priority - Week 1-2)

1.1 Database Tests (CRITICAL)

File: tests/test_database/test_connection.py

  • Test database initialization
  • Test WAL mode configuration
  • Test PRAGMA settings
  • Test table creation
  • Test foreign key constraints
  • Target: 15-20 test functions

File: tests/test_database/test_migration_manager.py

  • Test migration detection
  • Test backup creation
  • Test migration execution
  • Test rollback on failure
  • Test version tracking
  • Target: 15-20 test functions

1.2 Controller Tests (HIGH)

File: tests/test_controllers/test_employee_controller.py

  • Test employee CRUD operations
  • Test data validation
  • Test filtering and sorting
  • Test relationship handling
  • Target: 20-25 test functions

File: tests/test_controllers/test_alerts_controller.py

  • Test alert calculation
  • Test alert filtering
  • Test date thresholds
  • Target: 10-15 test functions

1.3 Application State Tests (HIGH)

File: tests/test_state/test_app_state.py

  • Test state initialization
  • Test lock operations
  • Test state persistence
  • Target: 10-15 test functions

  • tests/test_cli/test_caces_commands.py - 10-15 tests
  • tests/test_cli/test_employee_commands.py - 15-20 tests
  • tests/test_cli/test_medical_commands.py - 10-15 tests
  • tests/test_cli/test_config_commands.py - 10-15 tests
  • tests/test_cli/test_lock_commands.py - 10-15 tests

Total: 55-80 test functions

Phase 3: Utility Tests (Priority - Week 3-4)

Files to create:

  • tests/test_utils/test_validation.py - 20-25 tests
  • tests/test_utils/test_undo_manager.py - 15-20 tests
  • tests/test_utils/test_state_tracker.py - 10-15 tests
  • tests/test_utils/test_file_validation.py - 15-20 tests

Total: 60-80 test functions

Phase 4: Integration Tests (Priority - Week 4-5)

File: tests/integration/test_workflows.py

  • Test complete employee management workflow
  • Test export/import operations
  • Test backup/restore operations
  • Target: 15-20 test functions

  • Test command chaining
  • Target: 10-15 test functions

Coverage Targets

Phase Target Timeline
Phase 1 20% coverage Week 1-2
Phase 2 30% coverage Week 2-3
Phase 3 40% coverage Week 3-4
Phase 4 50% coverage Week 4-5
Future 60%+ coverage Ongoing

Implementation Strategy

  1. Start with Critical: Database and controller tests first
  2. Use Fixtures: Leverage existing tests/conftest.py fixtures
  3. Test Real Behavior: Reduce mocking, test with real database
  4. Continuous Integration: Run tests on every commit
  5. Coverage Monitoring: Set up coverage badges in CI
  6. Code Review: Review all tests for quality

Dependencies

  • Test infrastructure: ✅ Complete (pytest, fixtures)
  • Database test utilities: ✅ Complete
  • Mock utilities: ✅ Complete (pytest-mock)

Related Issues

  • ISSUE-040: Missing Test Coverage (historical)

Acceptance Criteria

  • Database connection tests: 90%+ coverage
  • Migration tests: 80%+ coverage
  • Controller tests: 70%+ coverage
  • CLI tests: 60%+ coverage
  • Utility tests: 60%+ coverage
  • Overall coverage: 50%+
  • All tests pass consistently
  • Integration tests cover critical workflows
  • Coverage threshold raised to 50%

Estimated Effort

Total: 4-5 weeks

  • Phase 1 (Critical): 1-2 weeks
  • Phase 2 (CLI): 1 week
  • Phase 3 (Utilities): 1 week
  • Phase 4 (Integration): 1 week

Notes

Test coverage is critical for production readiness. The current 8% coverage is unacceptable for a production application that manages employee data, certifications, and compliance information.
