The effort required to make this work is much bigger than the support for crossing of ongoing CSS animations. Neither capturing nor restoration are straight forward or even clear to me right now.
If you are looking for a real challenge, maybe this one is for you?
As I assume some decent amount of code for that feature, I would prefer it in an optional add-on.
