VirtualDub2 crashes when viewing the list of video codecs in some cases

Old VirtualDub2 x64 build 44282 shows a list of video codecs.
VirtualDub2 x64 version 2.1.0.600 crashes when trying to show a list of video codecs.

This happens after commit 6b6e93d, when I remade the project for Visual Studio 2019 and Windows 10 SDK.

The problem is caused by ffdshow Video Codec x64 (ff_vfw.dll). ffdshow_rev4533_20140929_clsid_x64.exe

As a "workaround" solution, version 2.1.0.602 (commit ee06796) will be ignored by ffdshow Video Codec x64. Better patches are welcome.

Owners of Logitech webcams may have a similar problem. The error refers to lvcod64.dll. This file is installed with the driver.

I was glad to see the 64-bit version includes more built-in video codecs than an earlier version, however I mostly use the 32-bit version because I need some video filters (such as Logoaway) which are not available in 64-bit. I recently installed the trial version of Pegasys PICVideo 3 MJPEG codec so I can convert video to MJPEG format. When I loaded VirtualDub2 2.4.3.944 and opened the video compression to select the codec, it crashed. Once I uninstalled the Pegasys codec, it worked again. The earlier version, VirtualDub2 build 44282 has no such issue, it opens the video compression and I can select and use any codec, including the Pegasys PICVideo 3 MJPEG. Why this happens? How can I fix it?

PS: I see that all FFMPEG based codecs allow only to set the quality. Can you please modify them to allow setting a bitrate for VBR encoding as well? There are some cases that I want to set a specific bitrate so the video file size doesn't exceed a target size, nor it is much smaller.

You can investigate the cause of crash of some 64-bit VfW codecs and write here about the results.

I recently installed the trial version of Pegasys PICVideo 3 MJPEG codec so I can convert video to MJPEG format. When I loaded VirtualDub2 2.4.3.944 and opened the video compression to select the codec, it crashed.

If you provide the installer for this codec, I can try removing it from the list of video compressors for VirtualDub2 x64.

You can also use PICVideo MJPEG 4, which has fixed the crash in the 64-bit version.

The Pegasys codec is 32-bit. The 64-bit version of VirtualDub2 works fine as there is no 64-bit version of the codec. The 32-bit version crashes. I will try the newer version and see if that fixes the issue. Thanks.

OK, I downloaded the version 4, as you suggested. It doesn't crash, thanks. Probably some incompatibility with older version 3.

Can I disable this specific codec or exclude it when VirtualDub2 enumerates available video codecs, so it doesn't crash? Since it works fine with older VirtualDub2 version, I don't want to uninstall it. I attach a photo of the error message, in case that it helps.

PS: I gladly saw you added a lot of FFMPEG codecs in latest version, such as HEVC, but all of them are quality only, Can you please add the option for a specific average bitrate (ABR or VBR). I need that to make the resulting video have a specific file size. Thanks

Please click the "Advanced..." button. There should be a line similar to this:

I did press Advanced and the error refers to the JPEG 2000 compression component of the Pegasys PICVideo 3 MJPEG codec pack (it has MPJEG, JPEG 2000 and Wavelet). This cannot be disabled separately. To avoid uninstalling the whole pack, I tried to rename the respective .dll files so they are not detected when VirtualDub2 searches for available codecs. This trick worked, it loaded the list of available codecs without crashing. I then renamed them back to the original names but now they don't appear even in build 44282. Weird. So if I want to keep the Pegasys codec pack, I need to use build 44282 for the 32-bit version and only use the 64-bit version of v2.4.3.944 Pity as the 64-bit version has few filters compared to the 32-bit version.
