Viewing live data without using database

Is it possible to directly capture the traffic port stats and display it into a web server without storing it in the database? Thanks.

I'm assuming that some IPC processing ( MessagePack, XML-RPC or something) is better than using RDBMS ?

I've started to use MySQL by force of habit.
But I prefer to use a better (better performance, more stylish) way.

If you have another approach that can be equivalent, please adapt it.
