It's worth keeping in mind that I've been planning to add support for a routes.d folder. This would hold a JSON doc for each route making it much easier to treat each route as a separate entity. This would become it's own resource in puppet parlance, I'm not sure how that would map to chef.

I've also been planning to update auth-proxy to accept a path to a config file so that you could put the configuration in /etc where it actually belongs rather than dropping it in the project folder itself.

If expects proxy_routes databag, with one item per route. Also builds rest of the config.json from node['auth_proxy']['config'] hash with #to_json
