Overview

Focused Work is a flexible timer application that supports multiple productivity methodologies including Pomodoro, Flowmodoro, or completely custom timed structures. The killer feature is its deep Apple Shortcuts integration and ability to automatically turn Focus Modes on and off.

Supported Methodologies

Pomodoro Technique

Traditional 25-minute work intervals with 5-minute breaks and longer 15-30 minute breaks after 4 sessions.

Flowmodoro

Work for as long as you maintain flow state, then take a break proportional to your work time (typically 1/5 of work duration). More flexible than rigid 25-minute intervals.

Custom Structures

Create your own timed work/break patterns:

  • 90-minute deep work sessions with 20-minute breaks
  • 52/17 method (52 minutes work, 17 minutes break)
  • Any combination that matches your energy patterns

Key Features

  • Multiple Timer Modes: Pomodoro, Flowmodoro, or custom intervals
  • Apple Shortcuts Integration: Automate timer start/stop and focus mode activation
  • Focus Mode Automation: Automatically enable/disable iPhone Focus Modes when sessions begin/end
  • Flexible Sessions: Adjust session length on the fly
  • Statistics: Track completed sessions and total focus time
  • Minimal Interface: Clean design that stays out of your way
  • Background Operation: Timer continues running even when app is closed

Shortcuts Integration (Killer Feature)

Focused Work's Shortcuts integration enables powerful automation:

Automatic Focus Modes:

  • Start work session → Activates "Work" Focus Mode
  • Begin break → Switches to "Personal" Focus Mode
  • End session → Returns to default settings

Custom Automation:

  • Time-based: Start deep work session at 9 AM daily
  • Location-based: Activate focus timer when arriving at office
  • Context-based: Begin Pomodoro when opening specific work apps

Integration with Other Apps:

  • Log completed sessions to spreadsheet
  • Send session summaries to note-taking apps
  • Update calendar with focus time blocks
  • Trigger home automation (adjust lighting for focus)

Flowmodoro Support

Unlike rigid Pomodoro timers, Focused Work embraces Flowmodoro:

  • Work until flow state ends naturally
  • App suggests break duration based on work time
  • More adaptive to creative work and deep thinking
  • Reduces interruptions during productive flow

Benefits

  • Maximum Flexibility: Not locked into 25-minute intervals
  • Smart Automation: Focus Modes activate without manual switching
  • Respects Flow State: Flowmodoro prevents unnecessary interruptions
  • Integration Powerhouse: Shortcuts enable complex workflows
  • Adapts to You: Create structures matching your natural rhythms

Use Cases
