[Feature request] Web support

Absolutely ecstatic to finally see a proper RN text editor.

I am running an Expo app for iOS / web / Electron. My current editor implementation is TipTap in a webview, with Expo DOM marshaled props.

I would love to integrate react-native-enriched, but worry about minor inconsistencies when it comes to cross-platform user experiences.

I know this is a huge ask for a new project, but thought I'd open a ticket to track interest, at least.

Web support could literally mean using TipTap, but via some subset that is guaranteed to render and parse identically to react-native-enriched.

Hey, we're glad to hear that.

Web support is definitely on our roadmap, however, as you have noted, supporting another platform is a complex task, so unfortunately we do not have a specific timeline.

I’m using Tiptap on the web too and would like to use react-native-enriched on mobile (Expo).
It would be great if the EnrichedTextInput content could be exported in ProseMirror format (compatible with Tiptap).
Alternatively, HTML export would be enough, since Tiptap supports it as well.

@lxup Hi, react-native-enriched already creates text output as an HTML (onChangeHtml event). Keep in mind that some of the styles may not be fully compatible, react-native-enriched has one custom tag mention, we also do not support nested lists.

I've tested using react-native-enriched on mobile and 10tap (with custom tiptap editor) on web in universal app setup and it worked totally fine (but I had to parse couple html tags manually for full compatibility )

That's more or less what I was suggesting as a fast path to web support for react-native-enriched – just ship a TipTap editor under the hood, which is guaranteed to be 100% compatible with the native API/output.

Going the full react-native-web path sounds like a monumental task.

Yes, I saw that we can export to HTML. Unfortunately, storing enriched text as HTML in a database can introduce security or consistency issues — for example, malformed HTML or unsafe tags. With a ProseMirror-like format, we can store the content as strongly typed JSON, which is much safer and more reliable.

The only workaround I found is to convert the HTML content to ProseMirror format on the backend during save. However, when fetching and displaying the data, it requires another request to an external service to get back the ProseMirror format, since it seems impossible to perform this conversion directly in React Native (as it relies on the DOM).

@exploIF I see there are now requests for platforms like macOS, etc. Can you confirm the priority order, if defined, of future platform support?

I've had really annoying issues with TipTap (well, ProseMirror really) inserting ghost br tags and then removing them on onUpdate, etc. Would really like to swap over!

Great work with this lib. We're in a similar situation as @isaachinman
If this lib supports ProseMirror at some point it'd be massive selling point for a lot of us.

My 2 cents on the topic. I don't think web support is as important as supporting a standard format (either be ProseMirror, Delta, Lexical, etc.). The problem for most of us is gonna be the reconciliation in the DB among multiple platforms. If everything converge to the same standard we can use this fantastic lib for React Native, TipTap for Web, etc.

Right now, we can do such reconciliation with the resulting HTML. But that's akin to Markdown. It's string parsing. For a powerful rich text editor we need to support Document models.

That'd be a no-brainer swap for us. Hope it helps! Keep up the nice work 💖

I would be happy to help, but haven't heard anything.

I have no use for mentions. Perhaps we can ship a bare-bones cross-platform version first, that supports a subset of react-native-enriched features?

I would like to go through open web related PRs this week. We plan to continue working on adding web support. I will let you know if there is something that community can help us (we will definitely need some early testers once we have something working :D)
