want git clone depth control

https://github.com/oxidecomputer/cockroach has 70,000 commits and it takes forever to clone. --depth 1 would be sufficient for my use case (although I'd need to find a workaround for it wanting to use git describe as part of the version string).

NB, also: You could use skip_clone immediately to prevent the built-in cloning behaviour at all. It's described in the README. You'd then need to clone the repository yourself with whatever directory structure and options you'd like.

actions/checkout defaults to a shallow (--depth 1) clone, and you can configure the depth with fetch-depth (example, which demonstrates me explicitly telling GitHub that I want the entire 70,000 commit history for the purpose of getting a single tag so that git describe works, lol).

I may experiment with skip_clone for the time being!
