Right now, SplitPro uses Plaid for bank connectivity, and it will stop supporting GoCardless. This change limits users' options in the UK and Europe, especially when Plaid does not cover certain banks.
To fix this, we should add support for EnableBanking. This would give users in the EU and UK more choices for connecting their accounts and importing transactions.
Proposed solution:
We want to add Enable Banking as a bank connectivity option alongside Plaid.
How to implement this:
- Integrate Enable Banking for account linking and transaction retrieval.
- Let users choose Enable Banking when they connect their bank accounts.
- Allow users to import account balances and transactions through the Enable Banking API.
- Include options to enter Enable Banking credentials.
- Reuse existing models for accounts and transactions to keep it simple.
Helpful resources:
Alternatives we considered:
- Continuing to use only Plaid.
- Adding another European open banking provider like TrueLayer or Tink.
- Manually importing transactions using CSV files.
Enable Banking seems like a good choice because it offers wide coverage across the EU and UK with a single API, which can help replace the functionality GoCardless provided.
App version:
This was tested on the latest self-hosted release available.
Additional context:
Benefits of adding Enable Banking:
- Better coverage for UK and European users.
- Less reliance on one provider.
- A possible replacement for GoCardless banking services.
- Access to thousands of compliant banks through one integration.
Adding Enable Banking would make SplitPro more accessible to users outside North America and improve the bank connection experience for users in the EU and UK.
