Installing MacFuse without recovery mode?

I'm stuck on MacFuse installation. Not your fault, it's the fascists in this campus IT department. I need to be able to install without booting into Recovery Mode.

The latest version I can find here is 5.1.3, which requires me to reboot into Recovery Mode to install the system extension. IT has locked Recovery Mode. Can anyone help? I'm running 26, and this page https://macfuse.github.io/ seems to indicate that there's an option available.

According to the wiki I think it is necessary to boot into recovery mode

Enabling support for third party kernel extensions (Apple Silicon Macs)
Enabling support for third party kernel extensions is only needed when using macFUSE for the first time on an Apple Silicon Mac. In case you already enabled support for third party kernel extensions, continue with Allow the macFUSE kernel extension to load.

The wiki indicates this is only if you are using a Kernel Backend. The section for FSKit Backend indicates that recovery mode is no longer needed:

FSKit Backend
This new backend runs entirely in user space and is based on the new FSKit API (available in macOS 15.4 and later). It does not
require a kernel extension or any security configuration changes in Recovery Mode.

Kernel Backend
This backend relies on a kernel extension to bridges the gap between user space file systems and the macOS kernel. It offers the best
performance and full feature support but requires enabling support for third-party kernel extensions in Recovery Mode.

And yet I am also being required to boot into recovery mode (Tahoe 26.3.1)

I am having the same issue... the FSKit install is also requiring recovery mode.
