Does this mean an 8gb card?

It ended up being a ~4.3gb image - so an 8gb card worked.

even you get an error message when you are creating the image it should be fine with an 4GB sd card

internally the 2 partitions are 3.9GB, but when I pull a new image from my development sdcard with:

dd if=/dev/sdX bs=1M if=name.img count=4k

it ends up being 10% bigger (~4.3GB) then necessary ...
when this image now gets copied back onto an 4GB sdcard it is too big for it,
so it troughs an error, even being a fine RPI image clone
