When submitting a heat pump report, please include the unit model number, whether it's part of a branch box system, the connect response from the log (see screenshot), as well as any findings that you may think are relevant.

Pretty cool to see how far this stuff has come. I originally hacked the protocol back in 2016, which is what the Arduino library was based on (https://web.archive.org/web/20171007190023/https://nicegear.co.nz/blog/hacking-a-mitsubishi-heat-pump-air-conditioner/). I remember sitting in my office with a logic analyzer poking things and prodding the thermistor etc. Things are much more convenient now with all the cheap tiny ESP32 boards with all their functionality!

Notes:

• Thanks for your work on the component, it appears to be working well! That said, I've only had it set up for an hour or so. I wish you luck with getting it merged into ESPHome soon!
• Thermostat mode works with a PAC-SDW01RC-1 thermostat (I used level shifters, uncertain whether they are actually required or not). The SDW01RC does not report humidity. (I'm not sure how dry mode will work with that, but the thermostat appears to allow enabling dry mode. We'll find out in the summer.)
• As a cased coil for a central air system, the system doesn't support vertical or horizontal vanes, or the i-See sensor.
• The preheat, standby, compressor frequency, outside air temperature, actual fan, and thermostat temperature sensors work. I assume the defrost and error code sensors work, but haven't triggered either so far. The outside air temperature sensor works even while the heat pump itself is off.
• I had been using https://github.com/echavet/MitsubishiCN105ESPHome previously, but switched to this component because it allows passing through the thermostat and ignoring its reported temperature. Under that component, the input power sensor and kWh sensor did not appear to work for my setup - I assume the device doesn't support it, but I'll probably try feat: Add input watts, kWh sensor esphome-components#3 once it's available just in case.
• Under the previous setup, I had an Airzone CN105 splitter (AZX6ACCSPLMEL) allowing me to have both the thermostat and ESPHome connected simultaneously.
  • With the splitter, I couldn't reliably report a current temperature from Home Assistant because the thermostat would come along promptly and override it. Now it appears I should be able to, so this is a big improvement.
  • The thermostat's Installer / "Function Codes" feature didn't load at all - under this component, it appears to. (I have not yet changed any settings to verify that works, but I can list them and view their values.)
  • Now that I'm presumably no longer using the splitter, if you think you'd find it useful to attempt dumping its firmware, I may be able to do so. Inside, it appears to be primarily based around a MSP430F5438A, with what appear to be holes for headers for a UART and JTAG pins. I should have a MSP430 launchpad around here that may be able to interact with it, but I suspect it will be A Project to dump anything off of it. If it would be particularly useful, let me know, otherwise I may simply shelve it for now. (I don't personally expect it is doing much other than allowing the two devices to trade off packet sending, especially as the MitsubishiCN105ESPHome component worked fine with it and didn't report any unexpected data, so I don't imagine it would be interesting, but you may know otherwise.)

I'm not sure how dry mode will work with that, but the thermostat appears to allow enabling dry mode.

My understanding is the unit will just run in Dry Mode (lowest fan with cold coils) as long as it's on or until the room reaches a certain minimum temperature.

• The unit does has no i-see functionality
• Does not report compressor frequency (always 0hz)
• Outdoor temperature is valid only when the unit and the compressor are on, otherwise -63.5C.
• The filter status is always OK, I assume it's not tracking. This also makes the reset filter button useless.
• The "<>" horizontal vane position is not valid - it gets reset to the previously selected state.
• The "|" and "Auto" horizontal vane positions cause a [23:28:55][E][select:018]: 'Horizontal Vane Position': invalid state for publish_state(): error message. In both cases it does move the vane to the "|" position despite the consistent error message.
• Input W, lifetime kWh and runtime are supported.

Thanks for the detailed report, @ignisf . A couple quick clarifications:

The filter status is always OK, I assume it's not tracking. This also makes the reset filter button useless.

The filter status will remain OK for a number of hours based on installer functions (see image), but can also be disabled via the installer functions and may stay on OK in that case. Do you know off hand what value is set for that installer setting?

The "<>" horizontal vane position is not valid - it gets reset to the previously selected state.

I'm not personally familiar with the MSZ-AP50VGK, is it supposed to support "<>"? If not, resetting is probably the correct behavior.

The "|" and "Auto" horizontal vane position cause a [23:28:55][E][select:018]: 'Horizontal Vane Position': invalid state for publish_state(): error message and an eventual return to the last valid state. It does move the vane to the "|" before it returns to the last valid position.

Same question as above, are you expecting both of these to be supported? Interesting behavior for "|" though, that might warrant a closer look.

"<>" is not supported (I expect it should point half of the vane left and the other half - right, thus provide a 'diffuse' function). All the vanes are connected to a single motor and a single lever arm. The reset behaviour is correct in this case.

"Auto" and "|" are supported. By default they behave the same way from the remote control -- they point the vane straight forward. Maybe there's an issue with the reporting?

Will have to check for the filter again. I clean the filter regularly, however I haven't pushed any button to reset the status. The AC has 7171,5h runtime.

The power meter feature alone makes this DIY solution much much better than the stock MAC-577IF2-E as it does not support it, or did not 2 years ago when I replaced it with a $5 esp32...

I did a quick Google of that unit and it looks similar to my MSZ-GL06NA which doesn't have a media filter, and also always reports Filter 'OK'. That bit seems more for the larger air handlers with media filters I think.
