Understanding the Downtime on deploy

Hi, thanks for this great plugin

Can you explain this a little more?

Warning! First deploy may result in small downtime (~few seconds) of lambda, use some deployment strategy like canary for safer rollout.

Does the downtime occur on every deploy or just the first one?
If it happens on every deploy, why does it happen?
