Compose Booster - Implementation Plan

Overview

Building an AI-powered email composition assistant as an Electron desktop application. The app allows users to improve email drafts using various AI models through OpenRouter API with customizable prompts and tones.

Current State: ✅ Phases 1-4 Complete

  • Electron 39.2.6, TypeScript 4.5.4, Vite 5.4.21
  • Full MVP implementation with Quick Actions (renamed from Hot Combos)
  • Advanced settings with full CRUD operations
  • Professional UI polish with drag-and-drop reordering
  • All core features working and tested

Implementation Strategy

✅ COMPLETED: Phases 1-4

Based on user requirements:

  • ✅ Prioritize working application first
  • ✅ Keep distribution strategy in mind (no conflicting choices)
  • ✅ Test on both Windows and macOS
  • ✅ User has OpenRouter API key for testing
  • ✅ Generate application icons as part of implementation (guide created)
  • ✅ Auto-update deferred to post-launch (architecture kept compatible)
  • ✅ Advanced settings with full configuration management
  • ✅ Professional UI polish with drag-and-drop reordering
  • ✅ All user feedback incorporated

Delivery Approach: Phases 1-4 implemented completely and validated. Application ready for production use.

Architecture Summary

Process Separation

  • Main Process: Window management, IPC handlers, API calls, config persistence
  • Preload Scripts: Secure IPC bridge via contextBridge (one for main window, one for settings)
  • Renderer Processes: Two windows (main UI + settings) with vanilla TypeScript

Key Technical Decisions

  1. API calls in main process - Security (API key never exposed to renderer)
  2. electron-store for persistence - Simple, encrypted config storage
  3. Vanilla TypeScript - No React/Vue, component-based class structure
  4. IPC for all communication - Renderer ↔ Main via secure channels
  5. Mock API mode - Development without consuming credits

Data Flow

User Action → Renderer → Preload → IPC → Main Process → API Service → OpenRouter
                                                                ↓
User sees result ← Renderer ← Preload ← IPC ← Main Process ← Response

Implementation Status

✅ Phase 1: Foundation & MVP (COMPLETE)

Goal: Working email processing with basic UI

Files Created

Deliverable: ✅ Users can paste email, select model/prompt/tone, process via OpenRouter (or mock), view result, and configure API key.

✅ Phase 2: Hot Combos & Enhanced UX (COMPLETE)

Goal: Quick one-click processing and professional UI polish

Files Created

  • ✅ Hot combo buttons added to HTML with gradient styling

    • Cost estimation (if provided by API)
    • Color-coded status (success/error/processing)

  4. ✅ Clipboard Operations

    • Paste button (Ctrl+Shift+V)
    • Copy button (Ctrl+Shift+C)
    • "Copied!" confirmation toast

Deliverable: ✅ One-click email processing with professional loading states and clipboard shortcuts.

✅ Phase 3: Advanced Settings (COMPLETE)

Goal: Full configuration management for power users

Features Implemented:

    • Enable/disable models with checkbox
    • Add custom models via modal
    • Delete custom models (defaults protected)
    • Drag-and-drop reordering
    • "Detailed View" toggle to show/hide Model IDs and cost details
    • Color-coded cost tier badges (Low/Medium/High)
    • Reset to defaults button

  2. ✅ Prompts Tab

    • List view with name and preview
    • Modal editor for create/edit with validation
    • Duplicate prompt functionality
    • Drag-and-drop reordering
    • Default prompts protected from deletion (lock icon)
    • Variable substitution preview (${content}, ${tone}, ${date})

  3. ✅ Tones Tab

    • List view of tones
    • Modal editor for name + description
    • Add/edit/delete custom tones
    • Drag-and-drop reordering
    • Default tones protected from deletion (lock icon)

  4. ✅ Quick Actions Tab

    • Configure 3 quick action buttons
    • Select model, prompt, tone for each
    • Customize name and icon
    • Dual reordering: drag-and-drop + arrow buttons
    • Keyboard shortcut indicators (Ctrl/Cmd + 1/2/3)

    • Export settings to JSON file
    • Import settings from JSON with validation
    • Reset to defaults with confirmation

✅ Phase 4: Polish & Professional Features (COMPLETE)

Goal: Production-quality UX with all expected features

Testing Strategy

Development Testing
