attempt to log in fails

Attempts to log in as the git user with a fresh install fails with: Permission denied (publickey).

Is there a step that I'm missing or was assumed that I would do before trying to log into the gitty server for the first time?

By default gitty expects you to have a URL where it will pull your auth SSH Keys from. Have you configured it? Would you share how you're running it?
