The perl package MediaWiki::DumpFile is pretty old, and the latest tested version of wikipedia dump is 0.5.

Using the infomation from
https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki/commits/master/docs/export-0.6.xsd
I can imagine that Wikiprep can work well with a dump created before Nov 2011.

But wikipedia does not keep so ancient dumps (for the moment, the oldest dump for "dewiki" is about May 2015,
see http://dumps.wikimedia.org/dewiki/).

I'm very sorry about that, but one should either rewrite MediaWiki::DumpFile, either
find another Wikiprep-like tool, that works with the new format of wikipedia dumps.

I spent several last hours on trying to run the wikiprep and finally got this issue. So what does it really means? Is this project abandoned or is there some light at the end of the tunnel...?

This is what the wikiprep downloaded from your repository returned (in fact I got the same problem with original wikiprep "namespaces" when I simply changed the "use Parse::MediaWikiDump;" into "use MediaWiki::DumpFile::Compat"...)...

In fact is the only difference between my version and original one. See 8ff61cf

The project MediaWiki::DumpFile seems to be abandoned. But i don't know exactly. It's better to contact directly its author Tyler Riddle.

By the way, Edgar Meij @ejmeij has made available the old wikipedia dumps from 2012 and
Ignacio Traverso said me that my version of Wikiprep works well with Edgar's dumps.
