Frames support

plotly.js allows controlling trace data using sliders etc. https://plotly.com/javascript/sliders/#add-a-play-button-to-control-a-slider
I could not find it in source code, so I guess it's not supported directly yet.

Absolutely.
Every Trace, Figure and Layout object has the json available from the internal .json member, or can also be constructed from raw JSON strings. The example snippet in the main README has a basic example of each of these methods.
Just copying them here:

  layout.yaxis({R"({"title": {"text": "New y-axis title"}})"});

  // The underlying nlohmann::json object can also be accessed and modified directly.
  layout.json["title"]["font"]["size"] = 24;

At a glance, you should be able to add sliders and frame to the Layout JSON.

These animation elements should be fairly straightforward to produce C++ wrappers for. I'll look into it when I get a chance.
