won’t it just reset a few stats for said user? I know on scratch it just resets forum post count, ocular status, nothing major that isn’t already an accepted risk of a username change…

this refers to turning profile comments on and off for said user, not whether they can comment

the forum database stores the post/topic authors as a username because there's currently no way to get a user by ID in the API. so if i changed my r username to something else and then somebody took the r username, it would show all previous posts by me as being authored by them. i'm sure there's another reason but i've got nothing off the top of my head

since we're rewriting the frontend, this actually gives us an oppurtunity to switch to IDs instead of usernames. the forums can be tweaked for this change
