Perhaps video compression could be more efficient #158

Slow Internet Upload Issues

For people with slow internet connections (like me), I’ve been running into some issues with Lapse.

Right now, I’m only using it for Fallout since it’s required for the project, but I was wondering if it would be possible to make the site more friendly for users with really slow connections — for example, by allowing stronger video compression or offering lower-bandwidth upload options.

Problem

I recently tried uploading a recording from my Fallout project that was almost 50 minutes long, and unfortunately my network couldn’t handle the upload properly. The upload kept failing with errors, and I practically lost about an hour trying to get the footage uploaded.

Possible Improvements

It might help users with limited bandwidth if there were options like:

  • Better server-side video compression
  • Lower-quality upload presets
  • Chunked or resumable uploads
  • Clearer error messages when uploads fail

Question

If anyone has experience with this or has managed to upload large videos on slow networks, I’d really appreciate any tips.

For example:

  • Would using a VPN help stabilize the upload?
  • Are there recommended compression settings before uploading?

Any suggestions would help a lot.
