Effect of SOAP API's login() retirement

With my understanding that the the SOAP APO login() call will be retired in 2027 and the current connection initialization method with Connector.newConnection(config) involve login() call

Are these the same thing? Will the library update to use other methods of authentication without breaking changes or are we expected to switch to other auth method and update our application accordingly?

Adding to the issue, our client fails with ApiFault exceptionCode='INVALID_OPERATION' exceptionMessage='The SOAP Login operation is not available in the API version specified (65.0). Refer to the documentation for supported versions.' on API version 65.0.0.
