Make roles more configurable

• Have more statically coded parameters be settable by variables
• Have good defaults for the biggest possible number of parameters while making them configurable

Agree that this needs to be done. But shouldn't it broken down into per-role, more specific issues? I fear such a broad ticket never gets closed.
