Using this results in the search being rejected by ES because it serializes epoch-formatted longs as doubles like 1.775340656996E12.

Hello @pickypg, thanks for reporting this! Yeah this is a bug, and checking the documentation is making me realize that FieldDateMath should be a bit more complex to handle all date variants. This is an issue that comes from the specification's definition of the type, so it probably affects more clients than the java one. I'll discuss this with the team and update as soon as we have a solution :) thanks again
