Working the Ocarina

Basically trying to figure out how to use the Ocarina right lol
So far the only thing I know is left click plays a single tune and right click shows note blocks, but not sure how to use them...
When I click right and go back to my inventory then click again to go back to the ocarina hotbar, it's empty and the note blocks somehow entered my main inventory.
