Usage of part def associations

Hello,

this might be question that is rather related to the language than to the software. Please let me know if it is of place.

Let's say i create a part definition Camera that i associate certain parts with, for example a lens, a chip and a housing.
If i now create a part usage of the Camera, e.g. actioncam : Camera i see that the attributes and ports are inherited to my usage parts but associated parts do not follow and I would have to create new parts lens, chip and housing to complete my system.

Is my understanding of the language incomplete is this a feature that is going to be added in the future?

Hi Axel,

here is my example:

I create a part def Camera with an attribute, a port and two nested parts. Just to create two test cases one nested part is a usage entity of a defined part, the other one not.

Now i create a usage entity of the Camera (actioncam:Camera). I see that the part inherites the attribute and the port. Associated parts however are not inherited. I included the explorer in the screenshot.

Yes, you are right the inherited parts are not displayed in SysON.
But good news, we have integrated this enhancement very recently and it will be available in the future 2026.1.0 release (at the end of January).

I went back and tried my example from December again but I observe the same behavior. Do I need to "activate" this feature somehow?

Thank you for your kind words about the January release!

The inherited parts are visible in the new parts compartment of actioncam : Camera on your example.

Your example on my side:

To display the compartments you have several options:

1. you can hover actioncam : Camera graphical node and then click on the small "eye" icon on its top right corner. A menu named Manage Visibility allowing to display/hide all existing compartments will be displayed.
2. you can right-click on actioncam : Camera graphical node and select Show/Hide > Show valued content tool in the palette. It will display all compartments that are not empty.
