MacOS install, python issue

I saw a closed issue about macOS install, but that was different than my problem. I'm getting "Could not locate the roonapi Python module installation directory" and "No module named 'roonapi'" errors from the Install script, but a "pip list" command shows roonapi 0.1.6. Not sure what's wrong. Not a python person ...

Do you have multiple Python versions installed? Are you using Homebrew? Can you elaborate a little bit for me - what command are you running and what is your runtime environment? What Python are you using? Perhaps the command you are running is picking up a different Python than the Python you run at the command line. This could be due to some difference in your PATH environment variable.

I would start by examining your system to locate all Python deployments. Homebrew is often the culprit with multiple Python installations.

Yeah ... I thought it was homebrew and there is a python3 there, but now I also see a pip command in ~/Library/Python/3.9. When I force use of the homebrew pip, it refuses to install roonapi unless I use a virtual environment. Now I remember why I avoid python at all costs. :/ I appreciate your responsiveness on a Sunday afternoon! I've never used a virtual environment, if I follow those instructions pip is spitting out, will the RoonCommandLine work?

RoonCommandLine sets up its own Python virtual environment in /usr/local/Roon/venv. The roonapi Python module should get installed in /usr/local/Roon/venv/lib/python3.13/site-packages/roonapi as part of the normal RoonCommandLine installation process. This Python virtual environment is activated by the roon command and all subcommands.

How did you install RoonCommandLine? The standard install uses the pip command in /usr/local/Roon/venv/bin/pip to install Python modules. To use this Python virtual environment you can activate it with:

source /usr/local/Roon/venv/bin/activate
export PATH=/usr/local/Roon/venv/bin:${PATH}

After activating the RoonCommandLinee Python virtual environment you will be using the pip command installed there which should install Python modules in the RoonCommandLine virtual environment.

You can try reeinstalling roonapi after activating the venv:

python3 -m pip install --no-cache-dir --upgrade --force-reinstall roonapi

This would be a workaround for your possibly broken RoonCommandLine installation. You could also try reinstalling RoonCommandLine but I am not sure what went wrong.

I installed following the instructions for Mac on this GitHub repo. Used the "./Install" script. Following your suggestions above helped, but "python3" still found /usr/bin/python3 even though env |grep PATH shows /usr/local/Roon/venv/bin first. I think this is because your python3 link points to 3.12, which points to homebrew/opt/python@3.12 which does not exist on my Mac. I have 3.11 and 3.13 in homebrew. I tried changing the link so python3 points to 3.13, and got much further - but the roonapi installation still fails when it tries to install other supporting packages:

Installing collected packages: ifaddr, websocket_client, urllib3, six, idna, charset_normalizer, certifi, requests, roonapi
ERROR: Could not install packages due to an OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/local/Roon/venv/lib/python3.13/site-packages/ifaddr'
Check the permissions.

I'm thinking when I originally used the Install script there was a question about what account to use, root or my own. I was kind of confused by this so maybe I did the wrong thing? I'm going to try starting over - I assume removing the /usr/local/Roon directory will erase all traces? Thanks again!
