Probably by rebuilding ELKS or something, I don't really know how to work with ELKS so I'm assuming that's how it works.
I'm also worried about the fact that currently this only emulates a serial terminal.

ELKS DOOM uses like 500 kb of memory currently on ELKS. Maybe it could run on 300 kb.
Also it is a screenshot play on IBM PC 4.77MHz. You need the speed of 286 at least.
Add several emulators on top and you have a mission impossible for a NES.
I do not know anything about NES, but it seems a cartridge can expand the memory.

Better chances are for some kind of native NES port with monochorme screen, small screen size, etc based on the experience in producing ELKS DOOM.

As far as I'm aware, the most a game could use during the console's lifespan was 1 MB of ROM and 128 KB of RAM on a cartridge, or at least that's what the MMC5 mapper supports. A modern homebrew mapper could probably upgrade the console just enough to the point where it theoretically could run DOOM, but of course it would be very slow (unless you used a co-processor, which is cheating), and it would also break compatibility with pretty much every NES emulator out there.

The limited memory and lack of graphics support will probably prevent ELKS DOOM from being viable on NES86.
Backporting SNES DOOM to the NES seems like a better option.

I'd like to see Doom running natively on the NES though. I'm surprised that no one (to my knowledge) has done it yet.
Elite ran on the NES. How much harder could a Doom port be? 😆

Not related to the topic of "But can it run DOOM?" I would like to suggest making a public community server on discord for suggestions and/or discussions that don't really contribute to the development of NES86 itself in the future. As far as I'm aware there's no such server yet.
