Windows Troubleshooting Guide: Software & Hardware Fixes

Purpose

A guide for reinstalling Windows and fixing common hardware/software issues, used for ~30–50 clients over ~15–20 years. Demonstrates self-taught technical expertise for remote support.

Instructions

  • Tools: USB drive (8GB+), Windows ISO (Microsoft), Rufus, ChatGPT/Grok/DeepSeek/Gemini for error analysis, Google Sheets for tracking.
  • Prerequisites: Backup data; note product key.
  • Delivery: Shared via Google Docs or informal guidance.

Steps

1. Reinstall Windows (e.g., XP, 7)

  • Download Windows ISO from Microsoft.
  • Create bootable USB with Rufus: Select ISO, format USB, Start.
  • Boot from USB (BIOS: F2/Del, set USB first), install Windows (~30–60 min).
  • AI Tip: Use ChatGPT/Grok to decode errors (e.g., “0x80070057” via CMD).

2. Fix Hardware Issues

  • RAM Cleaning: Open PC, remove/replug RAM, clean contacts with isopropyl alcohol.
  • BIOS Battery: Replace CMOS battery for boot issues.
  • Peripherals: Troubleshoot printers/USB drives (check drivers, cables).
  • AI Tip: Ask Gemini for driver links or Reddit threads for specific hardware.

3. Configure Post-Installation

  • Install drivers (LAN, sound, USB LAN) from manufacturer sites.
  • Update Windows; install apps (e.g., Chrome).
  • Set up dual monitors: Adjust display settings, check HDMI/VGA cables.

4. Test and Document

  • Test peripherals (e.g., camera, printer) and booting.
  • Log fixes in Google Sheets (e.g., client name, issue, solution).
  • Optimize: Run Disk Cleanup, defragment drive.

Usage & Impact

  • Delivery: Guided ~30–50 clients; one YouTube video (~1,000–2,000 views).
  • Metrics: ~90% issue resolution; ~80% client satisfaction; ~5–10 people trained informally.
  • Efficiency: AI tools/Reddit reduced troubleshooting time by ~30%.
