Sony ILCE 7m5

Hi I uploaded 2 raw images from my new Sony ice 7m5. One is uncompressed Raw other is compressed.
I hope support could be added to rawspeed supported list. If you need more data (different camera settings etc) please send request with settings to use.
Hope darkroom could add this sensor / camera.

Thanks for the samples. But going by the manuaI I think we need many modes and combinations thereof: the new compressed HQ, L/M/S variants, APS-C crops...

Please upload a complete new set from a single shoot.

I have to look how to set it up with all the options. Menu system is not familiar with me. Coming from Olympus OM-D1m2. I'll check how to set it up for the correct raw files needed.

Btw, 7M5 users should be advised not to shoot in the new lossy "Compressed" or "Compressed (HQ)" modes (other than to provide samples), as it will probably take some time to support it. Only lossless is likely to get support for the time being.

With the English menu, the crop can be set through "Camera (Red) (3rd icon from the top) -> 1. Image Quality/Rec -> APS-C S35 Shooting".
"On" is "always APS-C", "Off" is "always Full-Frame", and "Auto" sets it depending on the lens.

By pressing the Trash icon with this setting selected, you can add it to your favourites (the star which is 1st from the top in the main menu) for a quicker access.
Same goes for the "Image Quality Settings" sub-menu there, to access both settings quicker.

Not sure what "L/M/S variants" means here though: I indeed see that the submissions for the 1m2 have Large/Medium/Small variants of "Lossless Compressed" RAWs but I don't see this option on the 7m5.
The only mention I see in the manual is that "L" is for Full-Frame and "M" for APS-C, but we've already accounted for those two versions.
Maybe the 33MPx sensor is not "high definition" enough to output three different crop sizes.

So as far as I understand and judging by the menu options I see, the goal would be to have for this model, with the same landscape:

• Lossless Compressed RAW Full-Frame
• Lossless Compressed RAW APS-C
• Compressed (HQ) RAW Full-Frame
• Compressed (HQ) RAW APS-C
• Compressed RAW Full-Frame
• Compressed RAW APS-C

The 7m5 also doesn't have uncompressed RAW like the 1m2 or even my previous 7m3: here everything is compressed one way or another.
Interestingly, I tried those 3 formats (in full-frame) and under Linux/KDE the "Lossless Compressed" RAW gets read directly, I assume by libraw.
Under Sony's latest Imaging Edge Desktop Edit, all three files are described as "ARW 6.0" but with different compressions, but as LibRaw only lists up to version 5.0 I guess it means that the Lossless Compressed 6.0 format is close enough to a previous one to get read directly, so that would be one format crossed from the list already.
(EDIT: well it's read with an incorrect bigger resolution that adds black bars, but I think it's just an issue in Gwenview)

@Ruzgfpegk Indeed, from the reference guide, it seems only Lossless, Compressed (HQ) (i.e. "new" lossy), and Compressed ("old" lossy presumably?) are possible, in FF (L) and APS-C (M) size. Then there are also aspect ratios - historically they don't affect the raw output size on Sonys, but it should be checked.

The previous generation of cameras did have a choice of L/M/S in lossless mode, so it is worth double checking as well (e.g. 7CM2 is also 33MPix and has those). It is possible they dropped them here with the bump to "ARW 6.0".

Yes, LibRaw will silently decode raws from unknown cameras if it understands the compression scheme (in this case lossless and "old" lossy should work), but it won't have the correct input color profile, it'll just grab a nearest match by name (7M4 in this case perhaps).

P.S. If either of you could share just one sample of each mode in FF via some cloud sharing service (and full set later to raw.pixls.us of course), that would be a good place to start experimenting as well.

I've done 24 shots : 3 RAW types (Lossless Compressed, Compressed (HQ), Compressed) * 4 crop ratios (3:2, 4:3, 16:9, 1:1) * 2 sizes (Full-Frame or APS-C), all of the same scene, all ISO 100 at F10.
With this scene the two lossy modes have roughly the same size every time.

The Android "Creators' App" allows to change the RAW type and the crop ratio of the camera from its menu, so by using it as a remote the whole shoot didn't take much time.

I've uploaded the whole set to raw.pixls.us and on a public NextCloud share.
I only added info to the RAW filenames, as the JPGs are there for reference only.

@LebedevRI I have confirmed the different aspect ratios files carry the same raw image size, so I guess one could keep only 6 samples on RPU? (Only Sony MakerNote crop metadata differs...)

P.S. Turns out "Compressed" is not the the same as "old" lossy, but I guess a lower quality setting of the new scheme. (No wonder LibRaw only opens lossless currently.)
